I’m not a Maya guy (yet), so feel free to disregard: did you choose to render the necessary buffers at the time of rendering in Maya?

Syntheyes has had an AE export module for a while, but I haven’t used it yet, generally exporting to Lightwave. If you write the guys at Ssontech, they can let you know if there are any issues with it.

Have you entered the secret prefs by holding down the shift key when accessing the prefs? Hold it down until the dialog box appears. Try setting it to purge every 5 frames during Make Movie.
Or … have you downloaded the latest DirectX drivers? (a guess)
Or … if you’re on the latest Quicktime, have you tried downgrading to QT 6.5 or whatever?

The best way to use broadcast safe is with the “key out unsafe” option. You place it in an adjustment layer, switch it on, and scan through the comp for any keyed out bits. If you find any, adjust hue/sat or levels until they come back, then switch off the Broadcast Safe effect for rendering.
Make sure your comp’s background colour is something bright that you can see, at least for this test.
As for yellows, to make them safe, use hue/sat to make them a little more orange. Tip from Frank Capria.

I don’t think any AVI codecs support alpha. Generally, 32-bit TGAs are the way to go.

Sorry I can’t help on the codecs, but have you considered converting the HDV material to something else as soon as the footage is ingested? Because HDV is best as an acquisition format, it would be a good idea to edit and composite in another, more tried-and-true codec?
Just a thought. 🙂
