I recommend you hire a service bureau to record to DVCPRO tape. They usually require Targas or Animation-compressed Quicktimes from AE people, which you can manage.

If it’s in an AJA codec, it should be 720×480 or 720×486, right?

Do you mean “the news footage is being projected onto the chopper blades, and onto the streaking light”?

Try this:
1) copy about 100 of the images into a folder.
2) open the images without “image sequence” checked.
3) drag them all into a comp, making sure the layer order matches the image numbers in sequence. 001 on top, 002 next, and so on.
4) select all the layers, and make them 1 frame long.
5) select animation>keyframe assistants>sequence layers. (no overlap, no dissolve)
6) this should give you a movie. RAM preview and let us know what you see. Are the frames in order?(if the sequence is reversed, undo the “sequence layers” and select the layers in the reverse order.)

There’s a clue: in the ugly version, the downsampling isn’t equal, that is, the pixels aren’t square.
What info is shown for the footage in the Project window?

Use only presets.
Interpret the footage normally — don’t change anything about it.
Then drag the footage into a PAL widescreen preset comp.
Next, you have two choices if the original footage was 4:3:
a) leave black bars on the sides of the footage
b) scale it up to fill the screen — this will cut off the top and bottom of the footage and you’ll lose a bit of resolution due to the enlargement..These are your only choices if you want the footage to look normal and not strangely stretched. Pixel aspect ratios (PAR) are only to be used when making sure footage looks normal, that is, you interpret the footage with its native PAR and drag it into a comp using its native PAR. PAR is not used to make 4:3 fit 16:9 or vice versa.

It’s a shame for a good Irishman to admit it, but I’m not up on my new cameras …
(sorry, lame reference)… but do you have access to a camera that can record to hard drive through the HDMI port? If so, you might get better results. This is way out of my depth (!) though, so unless one of the wise folks here can offer something, you might want to check a videography forum.
