The issue is not the TV, it’s the DVD. The format restrictions always lie with the playback medium, not the display device.
You need to drag your 864×486 comp into a “DV widescreen preset” comp and render that. Bump the comp up one pixel if you have interlaced footage.

It’s not a big deal if the car only changes position, not shape, through the shot. You can keyframe the mask shape parameter by moving the mask across the screen.
Watch the footage back and forth, looking for places where the motion or shape of the object changes (those are “points of inflection”). Add intermediate keys only at these points. Don’t go frame-by-frame, and don’t pick an arbitrary interval (like 10 frames) to add keys. AE can interpolate the mask shape between points of inflection, so don’t go adding mask points anywhere else.

Well, right off the top, you have to choose something. Hold down shift before you click edit>prefs>general, and only release it when you see the big dialog box that has “show tool tips” and such. Click on the word “general” to access the “hmm, maybe I really don’t want general, I want something else” drop-down menu. 🙂 That is where you should find “secret” at the bottom.

Yep, it works on both. Hold shift down longer than you think you should when you select prefs>general. “Secret” should appear at the bottom of the list in the dialog box, not the menu at the top of the interface.

Work with proxies (check the Help) until you render.
Use the Secret prefs when rendering so you don’t run out of RAM. Hold down the shift key when accessing the prefs>general, and don’t release the shift key until you get the main prefs dialog. Look in the drop-down for “secret”. Try purging 5-15 frames there.

I agree. When we started using DV and adding setup, the levels were too high. We didn’t have to add setup with digital files.

Sorry, I’ve never tried that. Maybe you might have to dual-boot …?
I don’t think that kind of downgrade is possible, but maybe someone with better info will chime in.

By most accounts, Vista is very bad with pro apps like AE. I recommend you get a different laptop that comes with XP Pro installed.

Maybe you have Collapse Transformations enabled?

I believe that you can just enter the v4 serial number. AE will check your machine for v4, and if it doesn’t find it, will ask for your old serial.
There may or may not be an issue upgrading from standard, and not Production Bundle … it might be okay.
