Use the Grow Bounds effect along with the other effect.

Is AE interpreting it as interlaced? Sometimes that can goof up progressive footage.

Hmm. Just a thought — is there a 480 vs. 486 issue here? In other words, does the camera shoot to 480 and you’re in a 486 comp, with footage scaled up?

    (grasping at straws …)

    Hmph.

When we preview from the project window on Mac, we’re using the Quicktime Player. It plays the source file, not the imported and interpreted clip. So AE has a problem importing and interpreting the clip. Duh. 🙂

Hen you open a problematic clip in QT Player outside of AE, what does the info say about codec and audio?

Hmm. Odd. So the HD footage has audio — this we know because it can be accessed through FCP.

Is there a waveform associated with the footage (as a layer) in AE? (shortcut: LL)
Does the audio play from the timeline if you audio preview? (shortcut: . on the numeric pad)
What is the codec of the HD footage?

It might be a good idea to go back into the 3D app and generate the effect there, mostly because of the rotating camera and perspective change.

I don’t use 3DSMax, but you might be able to make a subdivided box that lies over the car and is bent to follow the car’s profile. It should probably be bevelled or have a flattened elliptical cross-section. Then you would apply an animated fractal noise movie created in AE to the bent box as a color/transparency texture map. Render this on its own, then import it into AE, blur it a bit and composite it over the car shot.

    Hope that helps … 🙂

Ah. Halloween is coming, judging by the posts lately.

To do this well, you need a 3D app. (Steve the broken record here). But you can probably fake it in AE with the displacement map effect. Make a movie of a white circle travelling around the body. Make the white circle like a white-to-black gradient (ramp), with white in the center going to black. The white areas will displace (move) the skin more. Render this movie, which will be the white moving dot only. Apply the displacement map effect to the footage using this movie as the map.

There should be a displacement map tutorial on the COW.

Keep in mind this is a 2D displacement, up and across. It does not know what “away from the arm perpendicularly” is, so the map won’t easily create bumps you can see in profile.

    Anybody else?

Just drag the big comp into a comp of the smaller desired size and render that.

Actually, you can drag it in now, and go back to the bigger comp and work there until it’s time to render the smaller one.

Yep … we can only see wireframes on the pasteboard, so yikesmikes way (or similar) is the way.
