Well there’s the thing Brett – the artist is barely moving at any speed at all.
I’ve worked with other interlaced formats for years – 10 Bit Uncompressed, HD, DV etc – and I’ve never encountered this problem before. Even when I’ve digitised footage with the wrong field order it still plays ok in the viewer and the canvas. Even this footage plays fine when I digitise it in another format, it’s just ProRes that plays back like this.
I can see why some of the contributors to this thread were perhaps a little impatient with me, but I appreciate all the advice from everyone. I just found it hard to comprehend that this is normal.
I’ve continued digitising everything at ProRes LT and now I’m recompressing it using Media Manager – that way it all works fine. It’s a bit laborious, especially as I have 30 hours of footage, but I’m getting there.
Many thanks to everyone,
Steve.

Thanks Jeremy,
I understand 1080i is interlaced at its finest, but you wouldn’t think so if you were looking at my screen…

The pictures are like this in the viewer and in the canvas.
It’s not like it on my external monitor, it plays fine on that.
When I open the clip in QT it’s only like this when I shrink the viewing size, it’s fine when it fills the screen.
Similarly, the lines are very much reduced in FCP when I stretch the viewer to fill the screen.
This problem occurs with all ProRes 1080i 25 codecs. However, if I digitise my footage at 1080i Uncompressed it looks fine in the viewer and everywhere else. Therefore I’m deducing the problem is caused at the digitising stage of the process. However, I still can’t work out what that problem is!
Thanks for your time, it’s much appreciated.

Unfortunately those lines are there in the Viewer, and the Canvas, and on my PAL monitor!
Meanwhile, I’m renting a HDW-M2000P HD Cam machine for £250 per day and I can’t use it to ingest all this footage until I fix this problem…
Thanks for your help Bret,
Cheers,
Steve.

The lines are actually wider and more pronounced than in this image, I think Photoshop must have done a bit of deinterlacing in the export.

Thanks again Michael,
Yes, I have AJA LH 1080i 25 PR Proxy in my presets and that’s what I’ve been using.
The problem I have is with the picture flickering by separating into horizontal lines when there’s movement in the scene, like this…
I need to find out what’s causing this and how to fix it…before I digitise the rest of the 30 hours of footage!
Thanks,
Steve.

Thank you Michael,
I also have FCP 7 and AJA 8 Software – but there’s no preset for PR Proxy 1080i 50 and no Easy Set Up for it either. I can only get it in 25 and 29.97 .
So it seems the answer to my problem is to work out why I haven’t got that preset.
Thanks for your advice,
Steve.

Of course, go right ahead. I’m a freelance director in the UK, I’m known for shooting large scale concerts. Last week I directed a 12 camera 1080i HD shoot of Grammy winner Imogen Heap at the Royal Albert Hall in London which had a web audience of half a million people. Other acts I’ve directed for across the world vary from Alicia Keys to the Qatari Philharmonic. My new website will up before Christmas, and the address will be stevieDVD.com . Catchy doncha think?

Thanks David,
If you were British I’d put you forward for a Knighthood.
Cheers,
Steve.

Thanks David, you’re bang on with your assumptions, I have indeed recently upgraded to FCS3.
How do I uninstall and re-install my AJA drivers? Is this something a ‘creative’ like me can do without wrecking my machine and having a nervous breakdown?
Thanks again,
Steve.

The offline/online scenario is exactly what I’m planning and if I’ve done my sums right I’m sure I can pull 12 channels of Proxy in a multiclip using a G-Speed Es Sata drive.
The comment about ProRes losing its timecode was made on this forum, by Ken Stone https://www.kenstone.net/discussions/read.php?3,25613,25625
although it’s in relation to transferring AVCHD.Thanks for all your contributions, it’s really appreciated.
