This is an outside editor with a new MacBook Pro. I have a desktop system. Same versions of the software will be used. Thanks for mentioning about the codecs and checking ALL files. I guess if I open the project from the FW HD I can do a save as and copy over the data to internal drives and relink. What would be the easiest way to relink without spending forever doing it? We will definitely be testing. Any other suggestions or pitfalls would be helpful. The AE would rough cut the project and dump back to FW HD and I would finish and color the project from there. More time and cost effective. Thanks.

    Adam,

I am aware of the HPX-500 not having AVC-Intra codec. Thanks for the reply. If I want to work up to a system that has the MacPro 3.2 Ghz (8-core), 8Gb RAM, 750 Mb system HD, 3 – 1 Tb Internal HD’s, Blu-Ray recorder, Panasonic P2 Deck for ingest, Maxx Digital or Dulce 4Tb RAID and Quantum tape drive for archive. What can I start with to start a P2 workflow? I want to phase in this upgrade if at all possible. I am considering Crucial technologies matching RAM and ordering the drives from NewEgg (Seagate Barracuda). I save about $700.00 doing it that way. What path should I take? Thanks.

I would suggest Sound Ideas https://www.sound-ideas.com. Excellent live music, not all canned or electronic. The quality of your music will drag your productions down or build them up. Excellent buy-out selection.

    Here are some specs:

    Two 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon (8-core)
    2GB (2 x 1GB)
    320GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb/s
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB (Two dual-link DVI)
    One 16x SuperDrive
    Apple Mighty Mouse
Apple Keyboard (English) + Mac OS X
AppleCare Protection Plan for Mac Pro (w/or w/o Display) – Auto-enroll

    Purchase:
    4 – 2Gb RAM (Crucial)
    4 – 1Tb Hitachi or Seagate Drives

When replacing the boot drive do I just do a restore or mirror the boot drive by installing the drive in bay 2? I will consider replacing my 2 – 17″ Studio Displays w/ 23″ down the road. Thanks.

    Jeff,

You read very correctly about me keeping my systems for a while. I have to justify the upgrade with the amount of business that I produce outside of running a government television station. I will be upgrading all apps to FCS 2. Thanks for your assistance. I have a couple of follow-up questions.

Would you purchase 3 – 2Gb RAM chipsets to get to 8 Gb?
Would you just go with the fastest machine 3.2 Ghz or would 2.8 be fine?
Here is the drive info: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST3500320AS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive – OEM.
Would 500 Gb be fine or should I go for the 750 Gb?

I would like to eventually look at an external RAID down the road and new monitors, but a new CPU should get me started in the right direction to help me be more efficient. I have to render most all of my transitions now. The final edits are great, but I am not efficient time-wise producing them. Thanks again.

    Thanks Rich,

I realize that Adobe makes Premiere. I have been using that NLE software since 1.0 or there abouts. I read your suggestion about ToolFarm. I am just looking for a transition tool set for FCP similar to Premiere transitions. I will check out ToolFarm to see what’s available. Again I have a client that is used to certain look of Premiere, but I prefer to edit on FCP. Thanks.

    Shane,

I trashed preferences before this project and reformatted the media drive. I captured the tape just fine now. It shows up as a 30+Gb clip on the drive and play in QT just fine. The problem is if I impoort the clip into FCP it shows only as the first clip of a little over a minute. Thanks.

    Zane,

Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately I read the words MacBook PRO and MacPRO. The little laptop I got was a MacBook with only one firewire port. Can a DA be used to have multiple ports on the same bus? Or do I just deal with the system drive and add a partition? This is not my main system, just an alternative with low end programs (FCExpress, PSElements). Thanks.

    Zane,

Is there going to be a problem that the macbook has only one firewire drive? Your thoughts?
