I’ve had no problems at all with the Wiebetech products. http://www.wiebetech.com

  • What if you brought your EDL into final cut pro. Also, make a Cinema Tools database from your new captures.

Then try to export the EDL back out of FCP, to make a cut list from the new database, like a match back process.

The pull list from that process would be in the order of the shots within the video tapes. If you know the in and out timecodes of each of your separate capture “master clips”, you might be able to rather quickly rename the clips in another application and bring that info back in to Final Cut to get your new clip names.

For that, I would export a batch list from final cut of the clips made from your AVid EDL import. Bring that into Excel, sort appropriately, and rename the clips in sections, then export that list back out and import as a batch list.

You might then have clips in FCP that are tied to your sequence, and to your capture files, because timecodes and names now match.

Sorry this is a little obtuse, but I’m on a trip and away from my FCP system to give you more specifics.

If you want the Cutting Edge for a bargain, buy the Bullitt special edition DVD. You can have that great car chase through San Francisco and the editing documentary as an extra feature.

  • The only way I know to color code is to use the label function, choosing an appropriate color.

I believe you can also export a FCP batch list, bring that in to create a database in Cinema Tools, and then export an Avid ALE from Cinema Tools.

Since you know the budget, you can estimate what percentage is available for total post, and then what percentage of that your salary and equipment rental would be, and then divide that by the amount of time you’ll need, and you’ll get an approximation. Make sure they have a post budget, because these indies seem to way underestimate finishing costs (especially sound work for their weak and noisy tracks).

For some idea of union rates, you can go to https://www.editorsguild.com/wage.asp# and pick the appropriate contract rates as a comparison.

Another factor is how much footage they shoot, and whether you have assistants, and whether you have to sync everything. Get it in writing, and even then prepared to fight to get paid.

If they’re shooting video, with a first time director, you could have insane amounts of footage, as they just might cover every angle and character to be safe, rather than preparing the scene properly with adequate coverage.

Also, talk to the script supervisor. If they’re good, they’ll make your job immensely easier.

Make sure the camera department is making proper logs, With video, some folks think this is not necessary. The work they don’t do is work you’ll have to do.

  • Under the file menu in Cinema Tools, export, converted edl, 24 fps from 30 fps, point at the EDL you want to convert.

It’s always good to run through the menus on a program, and see what’s there, and what’s in the submenu. If you don’t understand what’s there, then you can use help or the manual.

Tom, it’s great to finally read a cogent analysis of the two ads.

However, I believe that the idea of contrasting, unnatural color schemes with silhouette black images in front was stolen by both companies from “The Endless Summer” poster, and I hope Bruce Brown gets his lawsuit going soon.
