Yep, tangible goods only. You do this stuff out of the kindness of your heart. The trick is to make them fully aware of the value and then your compensation is advertising, free press, adding logos to packaging (I think you mentioned that one) maybe get a tasteful ad at the end credits, that sort of thing. They can also be a source for potential clients like on marketing/PR committees.

We last submitted in 2001. There’s a bunch up high on a shelf so clients can see them, but not the dates! I thought they were self-serving. We did it for the client and always bought them a trophy too. The ad council, head-to-head stuff bears much more value in my mind, but clients don’t know the difference. My guys wanna do the Telly’s this year and I’ll do it for them… and send one to the client. Although one client is out of business now… hope it wasn’t our fault! Dang banks.
It’ll be good use of your marketing dollars only if you spend the time to do all the necessary PR after you “win”.

What always scares me about this type of work is the exorbitant cost in re-work or changes for even the most simple text. They find a typo or they change the copy on one of those screens and it may be 2-3 hours of work to fix it. So keeping that in mind for project design is important. Let them know when the review and established change time is done and what becomes change orders and additional billings.

I tended to do what Grinner said, pay… then fix it yourself. I’ve trained myself to be a better boss now. More to say later, gotta get a quote done – but Grin, dig that YouTube video!

They gotta have passion and enthusiasm. That’s the most difficult thing to teach. Having them come in, work for a few hours and observing really let’s you know your starting point.
I had one young guy actually tell me he had nothing else to learn. I think I know about 1/10 of 1% of what there is to know and I still learn something every day.
Maybe I should have hired him.

We have multiple copies of this upgrade from 10/2006 and it is not ser# specific. Yeah! Installed and now I’m up to 5.1 on this particular system, but I need it to be 5.1.2 that I cannot find.
Question is: are there ANY issues with updating to 5.1.4? We’re in the final 45-60 days of a 9 month project and cannot afford any downtime or failure on what we already have completed. Thoughts?

You bring up a really great point and I totally agree that it should be sealed and sent directly to intended recipient. I don’t want to get all pessimistic, but you have to be so careful anymore what you say and then they want it in writing. Your recommendation cannot and should not be allowed to be used “out of context”. Meaning that the letter is written to a specific recipient at a specific time for a specific position. I disregard any letters if they are not current; the photocopied letter from 3 years ago has no bearing – like the freelance world “you’re only as good as your last job.”
If they want something that generic, I’d just post something on their facebook or LinkedIn.
And another thought, this is why applicants supply names for references – so the potential employer can get first-hand information within context. The more I think about it, it seems that the people that came in with generic letters like that, seem to be the ones prior employers were looking to get rid of. Hmmm.

YOU are your biggest overhead. Make sure you have AT LEAST 3 months of salary saved and AT LEAST 3 months of business overhead in cash. Also have AT LEAST 3 months of personal savings for backup. Better to make it 6 months. If this sounds tough, this is what the bank is looking for. They don’t take unnecessary risk. So if you want to take home $5K a month, have $30K+ in a money market.17 years ago we got a loan with only the equipment as collateral – that was handy.
And I totally agree with Brendan about renting gear. At times I think it sounds expensive, but not having payments or upkeep is a good thing.
