Thanks Ty, easy enough in multitrack mode. Is it not possible when using the Waveform recorder?

  • right click on your clip
    select ‘modify’, ‘audio channels’

    under preset, select ‘mono’
you can choose to turn independent channels off here, at least they’ll be separated.

On the sequence you can ‘option click’ one channel & delete if you like, or just mute it.

There are other ways, but this is quick.

I’m not familiar with the nano or samuri, but using a KiPro w/SDI you’ll get a better key fron the 4:2:2 image, but the files will be much larger than the MP4s on the SxS (26 min per 32g SD card). Connecting the KiPro to a laptop you could easily give names to each file on the fly. There may be a way to have a script written to name the file on the KiPro and then insert the name in a spreadsheet to along with TC data. You’ll go thru many SD cards till you can offload them.

I’d probably do this: I’ve successfully gone SDI from my EX1 to the Kona LHe board. This way you have unlimited record time and record straight to whatever format without conversions. You can name the QT files, logging and be copying them to the 5 drives almost instantly between shots.

  • I’m a Salesforce user for 2 years now and really love it. Basic plan is $5/mo. I upgraded to the Group at $15/mo a year ago when trying to get another user to help out, but I’m going back to the $5 plan in Jan.

It is super-powerful (I say that as an ACT! user for many years) and I wanted a cloud-based solution – log in from anywhere and anything. Hardest part is getting all of your data in, but that’s any program. Give a week or 2 of testing with 10 contacts to see how it functions. Plus it’s completely customizable. Reminders, ticklers, etc really easy. Account & contacts took some getting used to. SF customer service is 2nd to none.

It’s no longer integrated with google docs, but you can attach just about any file to a contact.

Being a solo operator has always been an issue with contact data. I use QB Pro, Google docs, Gmail, Salesforce and Stamps.com and none easily share data, it’s constant typing/copying in at least 2 locations: Salesforce (on my MAC) as the salesguy and QB (on the PC) as the invoice guy. I’m probably missing something in here too.

Oh, and the Android app for SF is a bit odd and you can’t do everything, but at least you can schedule from anywhere. I have no experience on an iPhone or iPad app. But to have your complete contact list with you on your phone and simple dialing from within, handy.

Willing to answer specifics if you have them. Basically I’m happy with it and I’m too far invested with historical data to move to another provider. The group version is nice to enter “opportunities” if you’re looking for that true “sales funnel” type of tracking.

I didn’t really think of that; that would be a bit underhanded! In that case I would think they would ask you to sign a release that what you create is their property. So if you get a letter to sign, that would be a flag for sure and I wouldn’t want to work there based on their poor ethics.

So I guess it would be up to you to take that risk.

  • No decks in the edit rooms since the move a little over a year ago, but they are in a rack in what’s basically a ‘catch all’ closet with a spare mac for capture. None of them are hooked up, just do that as needed a few times a year. They used to run thru a really nice Sigma router. I’ll keep them because they aren’t worth the time to sell. PVW2800s on ebay are $75-300. If any of them get use, it’s mostly a Pany S-VHS. Sigh.

In a way I do this all the time. Anybody contractor who edits on my gear is under scrutiny. I wouldn’t think it illegal for a potential employer to request it; a friend who applied at Prince’s Paisley Park Studio had to it. Somewhere on this forum years ago it was stated that “not using keyboard shortcuts lowers you compensation by about $10K per year.” I totally agree. Using a mouse to click menus is slow and amateur.

They are probably looking at your true skills, your file structure, organization, familiarity with the basics to see your real abilities.

I think it would be fun actually. Be all about soft skills first – communicate to make sure you know what they are looking, an expected timeframe… professionalism. Anyone can grab the mouse and start hacking away; but who can understand the job & the client. You may get the job by saying they have an unrealistic expectation given the volumes of content and timeframe, but if you offer and outline a solution I think you’d be in a good position.

    Good luck!

And don’t overlook renting this stuff, there’s no need to buy everything – you’ll go broke. Or hire and experienced soundperson and learn. And for sure you don’t want to buy a mic and put it right into action without gaining some experience in a similar environment before you try it in a client situation.

I used an H4N for the first time last week and I’m confused by that device. No problems with the sound quality, but it’s not a SoundDevices. My opinion would be turn off all the auto stuff, limiters, compressors, etc and feed it with line level from a good mixer and bypass the mic pre.

    All good info.

I prefer super/hyper cardiod just out of frame on a boom on a c-stand. Then a wired lav as 2nd choice. You could hide the mic in the hair too to elim that off-axis tone.

Peter mention reflection control. Cheap packing blankets on the floor and just out of frame do wonders.

My selection of mics usually has to do with the amount of time I have for setup and if I’m travelling solo. A lav for run-n-gun is great. If I have time and budget, I’ll bring a c-stand, boom, & supercardiod. Studio work like the shot you propose would be a boom setup for me.
