I don’t think it’s all that rare, in the wedding world I’ve heard it referred to as SDE, Same Day Edit. Like anything, it would be a budget line item and all you need to do is convince the client of its value to the viewer & event. Of all the events I’ve gone to, by the time the event is over, most attendees just wanna get out of there, and to show a 2-3 min video would be a bit of a drag. The placement before the entertainment is a plus.
I think the value comes in promoting the following year’s event – “Hey all you potential attendees! Look at all the cool stuff we did last year! Don’t miss out! YOU need to be here!” It’s also an opportunity for the client to help garner sponsorship – “Hey potential sponsor! Look at al the attendees and fun we had! You should pony up $10K for a booth and we’ll put you name in the program and on the big screen!”

That’s what’s known as a “bass rolloff” or “low end rolloff” switch. Basically it will reduce the low end rumble you get from air conditioners and such. It can, however, make your audio sound “thin” and you’ll need to EQ in post. I rarely use rolloff anymore with the great audio plugins for removing noise. If you’re going to use noise removal software, be sure to record at least 10 seconds of “room tone” to get your sample from.
Your best bet is to choose the proper location with as little noise as possible. Then turn off such items as room air conditioners/blowers (call facilities people at offices for help with that) unplug refrigerators (put your keys in the fridge so you remember to plug it back in).
And don’t forget really good headphones so you can really hear what the mic is picking up.
And practice with it before the actual shoot! Try some recordings at home with and without the various settings to see what you get.

Our retail client wanted exterior stills and video. Issue: full glass storefront, neon lights across the street and a 4-lane road in between with lots of head and taillights. Solution: Drape a 30′ high by 100′ long landscape plastic between the sign and a scissor lift with aircraft wire. Took us about 2 hours to setup.

Here’s one where I needed to see the tips of the snowboards, the car hood and the road surface. That’s my trusty DSR-300 DVCam back in the day. While on the roof on the side of the road securing everything, a state cop pulled over and asked if everything was OK. Told him I just needed to tighten down the baggage! He didn’t even question that a camera was mounted up there and drove off! Note to clients: this can be cool for you, but don’t tell them “oooo, we’re shooting a commercial!”

I’ve got a 75/35 fios line, but the bigger issue is the services themselves limit the speed not necessarily the isp. The reason I had to search for something better than dropbox is that they throttle and after I uploaded a 8gig file, the recipient couldn’t download it because of dbox’s 10gig/day bandwidth limit (up & down combined).

I’ve been happy lately with the transferbigfiles.com. Not peer-to-peer, they store the file as long as you pay. I use the $5/mo plan as needed, no subscription.

I’ve used Hoodman adapters with Sandisk Extreme class 10, 16 & 32gig cards for years without any issues. A 32g card gives you almost 2 hours of record time, 54 min on a 16gig.

Hi Al
I personally have never worked with Vegas and really know nothing about it’s full export capability; plus I was going PC to MAC. I do know VP didn’t export any of my titles. If you like I can put you in touch with the guy the did the export/conversion for me; he’s quite knowledgeable (and I don’t use that term frequently) on interoperability of mac/pc & editing software.
