It really depends on the 4K you want to work with. 4K prores maybe, I think the bit rate is around 250MB/sec. If you wanted to do 4K openEXR probably not. Two reasons here 1. Bitrate is around 1,500MB/sec and you’re asking a spinning drive to get 24 or more files a second.
I know Local Hero Post in LA has a openEXR workflow and they rent a creative.space system so they can get the speed and IOPS for a 4K workflow.
Other concerns could be wanting to add more space, others be able to connect, and data integrity.

My recommendation was not to use USB 3.0 I would use the Thunderbolt connection that is already on your mac and use a raided system such as this:

Best way to solve this problem is by figuring out how many concurrent connection will be pulling from the storage, and what video format you’re working with will determine the connection speed required. some other key factors is the size of your storage. If you wanted a 10TB NAS and you have 7.2Tb that’s a 72% closer to the center of the physical hard drive, and basic physics apply the closer to the center the slower the speed.
In some cases you might find it applicable to get a 10 gig network for you editing systems. Or T-bolt if applicable.
