  • How Should We Set Up Our External Storage?

We are looking for a 24TB raided drive to store footage for a documentary. About 30% of the footage stored on the drive would will be 4K.

I was thinking that we shouldn’t spend the extra $$ on a solid state drive because we can down-convert the 4k for offline and re-link for final output. A 7200RPM drive will probably be ok, right?

After doing some research, it looks like CalDigit is probably best and we should avoid G-Tech. Do you guys have any other suggestions?

Are we headed in the right direction?

why do you think G-Tech should be avoided ?
G-Tech is great, so is Cal Digit.

But ALL drives fail, so you will need a backup system, in case of failure. If you cannot afford a backup system, which includes simple single drives, then you cannot afford to do a documentary. If you lose your footage, someone will
    get shot.

Just adding to what Bob said. GTechs are great. I’ve been using GRAIDs for 6 yrs now with no complaints. Caldigits are good too but I’ve stopped buying their products as they are not available from local resellers here in Singapore anymore. Have a look at GTech GSpeed Studio XL. https://www.g-technology.com/products/g-speed-studio-xl-thunderbolt-ev-series-bay-adapters
And for backups, I find using bare 3.5″ drives on docks the best and simplest:)
