You already know your answer. FCP 7 does not work very well with it. Use FCP X or Adobe Premiere CS 6 to overcome your obstacles. You will only be swimming upstream with your feet in cement blocks using FCP 7.

Looks like you are a good candidate for Adobe Premiere CS6. Whether you are transcoding to ProRes Proxy or ProRes, it still going to take time in FCP. It will not be faster. Adobe allows you to work with your footage natively and immediately.

Have not used tape in a year. That was to make a Beta SP dub of a VNR.
For broadcast, I export to KiPro. Most OB trucks are using more and more of them.
I still have 2-3/4″ and 3-Beta SP decks. I got rid of my DSR-11 four years ago when I started shooting P2.

Use LCD4Video’s. Give yourself a good hour to set it up on location. You all also need a teleprompter App.

Use easy setup or let FCP change the sequence setting that matches your clips. If I were you, I would transcode your footage to ProRes and use a 1080/60i setting.

If you are in the US, DO NOT shoot 25p. That is for PAL land. Select 24p if you want that look.

Something is not right with your workflow. Log and transfer footage. Drag clip in timeline. Make sure sequence settings match footage. FCP can do the for you automatically if set up correctly. You should not have to render anything. If it is one long clip, it should come in as one big clip not 16 files.

Export to QT Reference file should only take a few minutes.

Your raid is plenty fast for your workflow. No need to use SSD for scratch drive.
