    I know you’re not supposed to and I know its frustrating to do so,

    But if you are already committed to editing in h.264 –

    Are there any tips, tricks or workaround to make it less of a headache?

    Any way to edit the sequence as low res or anything like that to make playback smoother?

    You already know your answer. FCP 7 does not work very well with it. Use FCP X or Adobe Premiere CS 6 to overcome your obstacles. You will only be swimming upstream with your feet in cement blocks using FCP 7.

    Use Media Manager to convert the project to ProRes422 if you are already editing. This new sequence becomes your master.

    Thanks. Yes Media manager is the way to go. Who am I kidding?
