You wouldn’t happen to be looking at it on an HD LCD monitor? they all line-double SD, looks terrible. judge it only on an SD monitor.

insert edits not always accurate, though recent drivers have improved. there have been times where I needed to replace a shot on an already output master, and I have had trouble with FCP not cooperating with the output to in/out, video only — mainly with error messages like that it cannot output a selection less than one frame or something like that when clearly the setup is correct. [btw, I ALWAYS output from the Viewer, not the canvas — FCP 3 problem workaround with mixed resolutions that I have continued to do with FCP 5].
I have had to sometimes make a much larger in/out selection to layback to tape than necessary to avoid this issue, or save/quit/delete prefs/tiger cache cleaner-medium-all levels/restart. then it works properly. I don’t know whether this is an CP issue [which I suspect], a AJA issue [not likely], or the fact that I use an Adaptec serial adapter for R-422 patching.
Hate to say it, but this is the one thing in FCP that I wish was exactly like Avid. Never ever had a problem with Avid with anything on output.

Be sure that the Device Control Settings in Audio/Video Settings is set to something other than a FW device. Try setting it to a Sony VTR RS-422 setting as if it was a beta or DBeta deck.

If it worked, great, but I don’t think you needed to do that.
Change the audio settings on the A/V Settings, but then you need to do cmd + 0 [zero] on the sequence in your bin and change the audio settings in the audio tab there too. then set the audio track to the proper channel by ctrl + click next to the track light [sorry, Avid term] to designate the channel patch.
I’ve always wished Apple would change this dopey procedure in a next version of FCP.

Shouldn’t matter which model you rent as long as it has RS-422 control and AES, and the tapes recorded with proper SMPTE TC.
I used an DA-88 [the old old version] with kona 2 and it worked fine, but I found the transport on the DA-88 to be INCREDIBLY slow.
If you can afford it, try to get the most modern version available — DA-98?
I also had a lot of problems with TC breaks and pre/post roll, though that was likely more an issue with the tape op on set than the deck or FCP system. I was using the same logging TC as the DBeta tapes, which were done by someone else on set. If you are doing the same [as opposed to logging/capturing directly from DA-88 from scratch], be sure to modify your clips from A/V to audio only/8-tracks, and change the source tape ID BEFORE you digitize – ypu will not be able to change it afterwards.
If you are then going to batch digitize, do test of a couple clips first to see if it captures all 8 tracks in one pass, or whether it does multiple passes [not good]. If it does multiple passes, you may need to manually modify capture settings, or re-log the clips by dragging old log info into the log window and modifying the reel ID to create new clips.
This was not a fun procedure, as you can see. hopefully, you are logging from scratch.

A note about the Panny 2600: bought one and within 6 months I had the strangest problem. Somehow, some dust got inside the monitor and attached itself to the interior of the front plastic panel, completely inaccessible to cleaning. It looked like a big blotch of schmutz.
We brought the monitor to Secaucus, NJ Panasonic service center and they were a bit dumbfounded. They asked if we were bakery or a construction company. Uh, no. We’re an editing company. They fixed it for free and said they would make a redesign recommendation.

Is there a remote chance that your Viewer/Canvas windows are NOT set to FIT TO WINDOW? That’ll do it too.
No mention of whether an imported QT has to be rendered [red line] in your sequence first before playing. I assume not. If so, your render specs and FCP playback specs are not compatible.
Also, were the G-Tech drives formatted as Mac HFS Extended before being used in the edit system? I believe GTech drives come out of the box as such, but I will not assume this is so all the time. If you open Disk Utility and select the volume in question, it should say the drive format somewhere at the bottom left. If it is anything but Mac HFS Extended, then there may be performance problems, and shouyld be erased and reformatted. Had a guy have problems like this before where 8-bit SD would not play on a borrowed drive and it was because it was formatted for PC.
