Just finished a couple of projects that went to SD DVD, it mostly looked great using compresor presets, however there were one or two shots that had high detail, that showed artifacting in SD. Not enough to warrant spending time recompressing, but I could see how it might me an issue in some circumstances.
BTW I have just finished an edit on a docco series for Discovery that has software downconverted HDV shot material alongside Digibeta footage in SD with no problems at all on delivery.

In your opinion – lots of people would disagree with you on that one, not everyone has the budget available to shoot DVCPro 100. HDV has it’s place and that includes for editing. Lots of BS circulating out there about the capabilities of HDV, most of it based on theory. In reality it is a much more forgiving format than the critics would have you think. I use a broad mix of HD formats from HDV to 10 bit Uncompressed , so I’m commenting from experience, and I have found it to be a useful addition to our toolset, we’ve cut HDV material into HDcam shot pieces with no problems at all.

If you want to keep T/C information then start new HDV project, capture all you material in HDV then Media Manage the project to recompress the clips to DVCPro100, leave to render then import the clips back into your project. Capturing from the analogue outs to DVC Pro 100 is not as good quality as recompressing – I know I’ve tried it.

I use a G5 iMac at home with a G-RAID firewire drive, footage is captured from a J30 via FW, I have found no issues at all over the lsat 5 months it edits DV very well and you gets loads of RT!

In the clip settings tab in the capture window, uncheck “create new clip on starte/stop” Providing you have FCP version 5.03

It’s slower but usable – get an external FW drive don’t use the internal. Having said that I’m currently editing a friends wedding video in HDV from the system drive in my G5 iMac and it works – just very slowly! I’m even getting some RT effects.
Consider a used G5 Powermac instead, much faster and room for expansion.
