    Hi Everyone,
I just started editing HDV with FCP5.0, using a Sony HVR M1. Every time I try and capture a clip, FCP allows the capture for a limited time, and then names it as a new clip. The longest clip I can capture is about 1:45(frequently it’ll kick out a new clip #/name every few seconds). I’m using Capture Now and can’t find any settings in the manual or elsewhere that’ll let me just capture the clip for as long as I want. I’d be happy to let FCP do what it wants but each time it interrupts the capture to create a new clip name it also loses about 6 frames between the clips. So I can’t just edit them together. Suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Eph.

In the clip settings tab in the capture window, uncheck “create new clip on starte/stop” Providing you have FCP version 5.03

    Hi Steve,
Thanks for your help. It turns out I bought, fresh out of the box FCP 5.1 from CompUSA. There is no
setting as you described in this version. Capturing has become a nightmare. It kicks into a new file arbritraily. There’s no broken time code and the camera was running in continuous takes, no on/off. I’ll go down to the store and see if they’ll take it back, but failing that any suggestions? I have a major project to deliver and this is one complication I didn’t foresee.
    Thanks,
    eph.

    Hi,

There is no FCP 5.1. You probably got 5.0.1 in your box. If that’s the case, run Mac OS X Software Update from System Preferences. There are free updates that will take you to 5.0.3.

Beyond that, if you continue to run into trouble capturing go into FCP’s User Preferences. On the right side of the window there is an option for “On timecode break…” select “Make New Clip” from the pop-up. Even if you’ve recorded the tape straight without stopping, there may be some glitch on it that’s forcing FCP to think there’s a break.

If the problem persists, go into your home (user) directory ~/Library/Preferences/Final Cut Pro User Data/ and throw out the following files: “Final Cut Pro 5.0 Prefs” “Final Cut Pro Obj Cache” and “Final Cut Pro Prof Cache”. RESTART.
