I just simply use compressor to make an Mpeg2 from my HD timeline, I actually use DVCPro HD on these projects because of the smaller disc space, but the reults are even better in ProRes.

The EX is a great camera, dial down or switch off the detail and you shouldn’t have any problems.

I’m just finishing my 3rd commercial DVD release that was partially shot with EX1/EX3’s in 50i mode alongside an HDcam HDW790. To date we have sold some 5000 copies of the first two releases without a single mention of any problems with the pictures, in fact we get great comments about picture quality I simply edit in FCP and make an SD Mpeg 2 file directly from the HD timeline and the results have no problems at all.

If you check my e-bay store and look at my feedback on the following titles “The Shuttleworth Collection 2008” and “Flying Legends 2008” you will see people are very happy with the results!

I also have some web videos here which have EX content on, I know they aren’t SD as such, but if there was a downconversion problem then it would show with Web Video as well.

I have even made NTSC versions of the discs with no issues.

Yes, you should turn the detail down, I’m not quite sure what all the hysteria is about the EX not doing good SD. I’m more than happy with it.

Can your work just not upgrade to the latest FCP version? it’s all very stable especially with BMD cards

we edit in the native XDcam EX codec but set the render codec to ProRes. When the edit is finished we render out a self contained Quicktime file as a master.

Then when we need SD copies on tape we drop the master into a DV sequence and render out to tape.

Any DVD’s or web files we need are then taken from the HD master file which improves the quality of output

Really should have checked on support BEFORE you upgraded to PP4. The problem is actually yours for NOT doing your research and assuming it would work.

You can try reducing the detail level – that will help with the blur in pans. Sony set their detail levels too high as standard anyway.

24P is not a great frame rate to use if you are handheld with fast movement anyway, 30P would be better.

Not sure why you think the image quality of 24P is better than 30P because there’s no difference at all apart from the frame rate!

HVX200 Advantages
Better image quality in the codec
Better gamma options
Better audio quality and options

Disagree with all these, it’s technically a better codec but the image quality from the front of the camera is nowhere near as good as the EX1.

How is the audio quality better, aren’t they both the same audio?

The technical people at Discovery also agree as the HVX is only allowed to be used in productions at the same percentage rate as HDV, the EX1 is approved for 100% production.

Yes you can, create a new folder for each BPAV Folder and label it Card135mbs720 or Card225mbs1080 etc

Portable USB hard drives are the way to go, quick transfer and cheap price.
