Though I use VLC too, you should also test on a DVD player. I’ve had many that would play on a computer, but wouldn’t on a DVD set top player – especially an older one.

That is typically our DVD workflow – encode the video to DVD specs derived from the DVD-HQ Bitrate Calculator, then import them into Encore. I’ve had much better results from this method rather than letting Encore do the encoding.

Strangely enough, I was having the problem again on a project that had sat dormant for a few months. On every attempt at encoding, the process would halt at a particular frame. I tried, as you suggest, other codecs and wrappers, even uncompressed, and it would happen every time. Figuring that the clip in which the halt occurred might be corrupted, I transcoded it to other formats and replace the seemingly errant file with one of them, and the halt was still happening. Then I realized that the halt was happening on the LAST frame of that clip, which probably meant that it was actually halting on the NEXT clip. Sure enough, I had neglected to remove MB Looks from that next clip. Removed Looks and encoding then worked perfectly.

Oh well. That’s the beauty of a tool like SolveigMM. The interface is a bit clunky, but if you’re only trimming of the head and tail, it’s not so bad.

I use SolveigMM Video Splitter to trim the ends off of footage I sell for stock shot with my T3i.
