I once installed the K-lite codec package, and it screwed quite a few things up. Can’t recall exactly what the issues were, but I remember that things settled down after I uninstalled it. I also remember that it required a reinstall of PPro and AE to eradicate the changes to the built-in codec structure for those programs. Suffice to say, if K-lite replaces the default codec for AVCHD files, and AE is expecting to use it’s own codecs for that task, I’d imagine that it would be angry.

Actually, this was a very common complaint as the AVCHD format came into being. It was, and actually still is today, usually a result of the registration of your AE install getting confused and thinking that it’s a trial version. The use of AVCHD(.mts) files was locked out unless the software was correctly activated. The solution was generally to deactivate/reactivate, or reinstall and re-activate.

For easily creating a garbage or ‘junk’ matte for a moving subject, this tutorial is wonderful.

[Jona Taylor] “creating thousands of subtitles via the titles generator”
For the first time in my life, I feel compelled to type something that I have resisted for years – OMG!

And I would imagine that without extensive studies involving many, many variables, the answer may reside in a coin toss, or at the very least, a gut feeling.

I used to be a Support Analyst for the IT division of a large metropolitan hospital. Our policy was to shut down non-essential computers during off-hours. I maintain that regimen here in our post house. The components most likely to fail due to ‘hours run’ are the hard drives. They are also the most critical components, especially if you do not maintain a regular backup. The less a hard drive is spinning, the longer it may live before failure.
Computers use quite a bit of energy when running – not only their own, but in your air conditioning as well, especially a high powered editing machine. They generate a lot of heat. There may be an argument that in a cold climate, they may actually save in heating costs.
To add to any confusion, it’s always been said that the most ‘wear and tear’ on a hard drive occurs at cold startup, so the case has also been made that leaving one spinning perpetually may actually lengthen it’s life.

Seems troubleshooting is part of the new norm for Adobe products. I probably spend 25% of my time doing it.
