  • Problem keying a puppet’s hair

Posted by Bruce Michaels on August 11, 2014 at 5:54 am

I’m trying to key out the background from this footage and I’ve tried a lot of tutorials but can’t seem to get rid of artifacts around this puppet’s hair.

What can I do to fix this? This is slowing down my work a lot, any advice is greatly appreciated.

The problem gets worst when there is movement

    What have you tried already?

You should be using a garbage mask so you don’t need to over-tweak the keyer to remove outside greens (which can reduce the finesse you can apply within the real keying area), and you may need to combine multiple layers to get a raelly good key.

Andrew Devis has a nice series here at the COW:

For easily creating a garbage or ‘junk’ matte for a moving subject, this tutorial is wonderful.

Also, have you tried to key with Ultra Key in Premiere?

[Steve Brame] “Also, have you tried to key with Ultra Key in Premiere?”

Good advice. I really like Ultra Key. It’s a good keyer, and it’s FAST.

This is heresy in some corners, but I don’t really like to use Keylight unless I have to. I’m partial to Primatte [link] in Ae.

What version of AE do you have? If you’ve got CC 2014 (version 13 of AE), you have access to the new Key Cleaner and Advanced Spill Suppressor that might be useful. It’s mentioned on this page [link] which also includes a link to a tutorial or two.
