Here is a solution to your problem but not an answer: Use a blend mode or Image mask.
Type your text and make it white. Add your smoke particle to the group. Go up to Object, Image Mask. In the Image mask tab drag the particle to the Mask Source well and you have a smoke particle conforming to the shape of the text.
To see this in action check out the Star Wars Hologram tutorial I made. What you want is at around 4 minutes and 35 seconds or so. Hope this helps.

Don’t key frame a fade in and fad out, use the Basic Motion, Fade In/Fade Out Behavior, it’s a lot faster. In FCP, I’ve had that nasty twitch happen before, dump the render files for the clip (motion project file) by lowering the opacity and then raising it back up or something and then re-render it. It’s worked for me every time.

Can you provide more detail as to what your trying to do or do you mean you want a Particle to follow a spline?

Very, cool. Type your paragraph in Motion. Select the group that defaulted with the text. Create a mask around the first part of the paragraph you want. I used the Bezier Mask Tool. Add a Fade in/Fade out behavior. Duplicate the group. (Command and D keys) Select the mask layer in the other group and open the Mask tab in the inspector. Check the Invert Mask check box so the other part of the paragraph is visible. Move it down the time line so it dissolve in later in the animation and that should do it. The .psd won’t go outside the boarder of the group it defaulted in. Create a new group and drag all of the layers into the new group and your problem will be solved. Hope this helps.

Noah is right, you can also: While in your SD project file go up to Edit, Project Properties. Pick your HD preset and then as Noah said, “Now you’ll need to re-size and maneuver each item to fit the new size and shape of the frame.” Hope this helps.

Let me see if I have this right. You have four lines of text. You want the first line to fade in, once the first line is half way faded in you want the 2nd line to fade in. If what I wrote is what you want to do then type a line of text on it’s own layer. Position them in the time line so they start where you want them and ad a Fade in/ Fade out behavior. Hope this helps.
