December 8, 2007 at 6:53 pm in reply to: why Avid?

Well, my situation is that I was an assistant editor in a post house full of Avids and learned my way around that system. I then got a job as an editor working on FCP, offlining, onlining and colouring and have been using that exclusively.
I have come to realise that to get more of the sort of work I want (broadcast) I will have to learn to edit in Avid properly which, to be honest, I am dreading.
I have become so accustomed to FCP that the idea of learning a new system, or even an old one, does not fill me with joy.
I have noticed that many of the editors I know feel the same. They are nearly all Avid editors who hate using FCP.
I have been encouraged to read here that there are those few editors able to use both systems at the same time. I have yet to meet one in real life! Maybe I’ll have a play around with MC again.

That seems to have fixed it. Thanks.

Ok, I got this info from the Disk utility

File system: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)

    Connection Bus : ATA

    Partition Type: Apple_HFS

    Device Tree: sata/k2-sata@1/@0:3

I’m not that techy about hard drives. Any help appreciated.

Well, i’d really like to start using Color. Do you think firewire is something they will support at some later stage?
    Thanks

So, that is not something that people do in FCP?
In avid it can be pretty handy to be able to just load up a selection in the viewer.
    Thanks

  • Thanks. Ill give it a try tomorrow.

Yes, I have ordered that book. I’m just waiting for it to arrive.
I have also taken the plunge and remapped just about all of my FCP keys and am flying through now! The two programs are quite similar when you get moving with them both at a basic level.

[Mark Raudonis] “Uh… let me think. 800,000 copies sold. Perhaps your question should be “Do you know anyone who HASN’T made the leap?””

It is not inconceivable that many people have never used Avid before using Final Cut Pro. In answer to your other question, yes, I know many people who haven’t made the leap from Avid.

[Mark Raudonis] “This topic is often discussed. Do a search .”

I did do a search. I searched “configuring keyboard, keyboard layout, remapping etc” and just about every other permutation and nothing came up. So don’t lecture me. I know how to use a forum.

Maybe you should try a forum for social skills.

That’s the one we were looking at actually, the ioHD.
What I was getting at was more to do with the output for monitoring. Presumably it would be best to get a cheap SD,crt type broadcast monitor instead of messing about with the MXO.
I was originally thinking we could use the ioHD in conjunction with the MXO, at least for the purposes of doing the colour work on an LCD.
Maybe it would just be easier to get a cheap broadcast monitor and go from there.
Thanks and apologies again for an off-topic post.
