Thanks Todd! I really appreciate your practical and respectful reply.

I was looking around on the Wisconsin IRS site and found a “what’s taxable” document talking about TONS of film and video specific items which they considered tangible if being stored digitally (in the cloud even). Hopefully my CPA will make sense of this for me 🙂

Still open for other thoughts as well, but than you again for your input!

Ah, time-remapping in AE doesn’t let me hold it when it gets too slow- it just goes silent. I would like it to drone (is that the word?) for a second before it fades to silence.
Any ideas?

Unfortunately that wont work as I already have the shot I’m going to use (it was shot for a different project and I’m simply recycling it). But, your suggestion probably would be the best way to go if I had the chance.

The idea for the shot is that I want a single car in the front of the traffic jam driving at a crawl (causing the backup). I’m working on it now and I think it’s going to work just fine… just a little time consuming.

I’ll post the results when I’m done.

Still open to other ideas if there are any! 🙂

Thanks Dave. I ended up doing exactly what you suggested. I tried the strobe effect but it didn’t give me the control I wanted. Still not sure if I like the final video but I’ll revisit it later and see if I like it better the way it was without the flicker.

I’m sure they were effects shots with much pre-planning and that it wasn’t a mistake or later added in post. It was probably shot at an overcranked frame rate timed specifically to (what I guess to be a fast strobe for lighting). I know I won’t get near the same result doing it in post but hopefully I get something “neat” at least. I’m trying to track down the Fight Club scene to review it myself and hopefully *show* exactly what I’m looking for- with the understanding that it won’t be the same.

Now that I think about it I’m guessing it’s as simply as doing a strobe effect in AE… I’ll try that out.

Thank you for your responses. RAID 5 might be better for me. I decided on RAID 1 for some reason when researching this. I think it might have been because I was thinking about an external harddrive to backup the RAID for offsite storage. I’m planning all 4 drives in the box to be 4TB drives. I was thinking I would have two sets of RAID 1 which would give me 8TB of total space, plus make it easier for offsite storage (2x 4TB external drives).

RAID 5 with 4 4TB drives would give me 12TB of storage and increased speed, right? That would be nice but then it might be hard to put together a 3rd redundant backup using external drives. What’s the reason RAID 5 is less safe?

Thank you guys for your suggestions! I ended up picking up the Audio-Technica AT875R. I found this based on some suggestions on forums I came across during research as well as the creator of JuicedLink who was very helpful in his suggestions. Because I will sometimes only have the option of running phantom power from my mixer (running on a 9v. battery) I decided to go with this. I want to say it lasts about 4-5 hours using some rechargeable 9v batteries (but it could be more or less).

I heard A LOT of great thoughts about the NTG-3 so I might still consider buying it for other uses. This particular project was 4 days of driving on a bus so I was very limited in battery use. I had 4 9v. batteries I was constantly swapping and recharging nightly.

The audio sounded great in the headphones but I have not yet listened to it on the computer. It was in a noisy environment (a loud bus) but it sounded exceptionally good. I imagine the NTG-3 would be that much better, but again the phantom power was my biggest concern.

A real quick shout out for the JuicedLink RM333- it’s awesome!

Thank you so much for the information! I think going with a Media Buyer is certainly the way to go as I have no desire to get into that kind of industry at the moment.

I should rephrase my original post. The “client” is not yet a client of mine since we’ve only been talking about their needs at the moment. During our conversation they asked about my ability in assisting with the distribution end of 30 second advertising spots. So, with that said I probably would not necessarily spend too much time researching pricing and negotiating, but rather find a trustworthy, reliable Media Buyer to refer them to. Of course I would be up front with my potential client in letting them know I haven’t thoroughly researched pricing but simply giving them some first contacts to consider.

Having never worked with a Media Buyer myself, would it be appropriate to post on this forum for suggested Buyers to refer my client to?
