I will probably go with the low-end laptop. She had Office 2003 installed, but I don’t think she’s used it in months. So, for all practical purposes, she doesn’t need a keyboard. (The keyboard on the laptop is kaput and she uses a USB keyboard.)

A netbook is certainly in the list, but I wouldn’t buy anything with Vista on it.
Don’t knock the crapware – I hate having to delete all of it as much as anyone, but the crapware pays a big piece of the hardware costs for you. The manufacturer probably doesn’t want to clutter the O/S either, but the money from the crapware authors is too good to say no.

mine is even simpler:
project name
–capture
–DVD files
—-DVDEverything generally goes into the project file, including veg files, renders, etc. In DVD files I put my .dar file and all work files. DVDA creates the _ts folders and content in the DVD subfolder.

I use sony Z1’s to record multi-cam stage productions. The HVR-DR60 Recording Unit allows me to record four hours per camera with no breaks. Is that long enough for you?

I am very happy with 10, but there’s no reason that you can’t have both versions on your PC. If 10 gives you a problem then don’t use it until you get your computer fixed.

I am using the LCD4Video.com 7-inch HDTV monitor on my Sony Z1’s. They were $250 on the NAB floor, and once in a while you an get them for that on their site. The monitor is pretty good for what it is. Much sharper than the cheap “security cam” moitors for $150. It is missing some of the high-end features of the $1600 monitors, but if all you need is a larger screen for framing, then this is it.

I made that discovery when (years ago) I hired a camera op to help with a complex theater shoot. He had a new Canon HDV camera, and I was using my Sony PD-150’s. I had him shoot in DV because I had no experience with HDV yet. When editing the project, I wound up using his footage whenever he had the shot because the DV from the HDV camera was noticeably sharper.Steve Mann
