First, do not EVER install a codec pack on your editing PC. They are usually made for the gamers and can replace the excellent codecs installed by Vegas with really inferior ones.
You can’t encode to ProRes on PC. Your best bet is to use Avid DNxHD. It’s free and just as good as ProRes. Best yet, both PC and Apple editing programs like it.

Thank you for your offer to assist, Colin. Any solutions you can offer would be greatly appreciated. The music producer, whom I had just met that morning was supposed to bring a backup recorder – but of course, she forgot it. The movie producer thinks that some of the music for the bad scenes can be salvaged from the video cameras shooting the “behind the scenes” extra (I guess you can’t call it B roll since it is in the extras of the DVD). As I said, I suspect that the dual-core laptop couldn’t keep up with the data flow from two Firepods. I can sell the Firepods on eBay for $200 each, so the investment isn’t a total loss. I will look at your suggestions for their replacements.

As Phil said, try running as administrator. That’s the only way I run Windows so I don’t see any problems that running as a user may effect. User/Admin problems usualy present as permissions errors, but it’s worth a shot.
I never use the explorer in Vegas – just never needed it. The fact that you can drag a file from the explorer in Vegas to the timeline but not from the Windows explorer does point to a possible registry error. Can you drag from the Windows Explorer to the Project Media window?You can try running “sfc /scannow” from the command window (start/run/cmd). This does a scan of system files, but I am dubious about sfc being a reliable diagnostic. (I have a problem with splwow64 (a system file) that sfc passes.)
On the other hand it just takes a few minutes to try.Another tool you might try is Glarysoft Registry Repair. I does find registry problems, mostly orphaned entries, but it does come highly recommended.

When a program can’t accept drag and drop files, then its “not registered” with Windows. (Not a registry error, just that when the object is dropped into Vegas there is no registry entry for the receiving application). In other words, when you try to drag and drop a file, Windows doesn’t know what to do. Have you tried reinstalling Vegas?

Graham – when I gang the two Firepods I am limited to 44KHz, so a mismatch isn’t likely. I am pretty certain that the problem is that the laptop can’t handle the data rate when all sixteen channels have sound.
