Activity Forums VEGAS Pro Cannot drag and drop audio files

  • Cannot drag and drop audio files

Sorry about this, as I have posted previously, but it seems that I can no longer drag and drop, copy, or cut and paste, any audio file onto my SVP12 timeline. I can now only add them through the Vegas Explorer window.

Music, sound effects, voice-overs etc., all in either WAV or MP3 formats. Very frustrating since I have been doing exactly this in the past and having two programs (SVP and iTunes) open side by side and easily and quickly locating and listening to an audio file, deciding which to one to use and dragging and dropping it onto a timeline is far and away the quickest option, for me anyway.

Any further thoughts please? I have exhausted my (small!) repertoire of computer tricks!

When a program can’t accept drag and drop files, then its “not registered” with Windows. (Not a registry error, just that when the object is dropped into Vegas there is no registry entry for the receiving application). In other words, when you try to drag and drop a file, Windows doesn’t know what to do. Have you tried reinstalling Vegas?

    Thanks for your reply Steve.

Tried reinstalling previously and did it again for good measure after your suggestion.

Still no good though. Still can only use the Explorer within Vegas itself!

Might download Vegas again and see whether that may work. No reason why it would be different of course but one never knows eh?!

Seems Nick and I were running in Admin mode (which I thought may have had something to do with it.

But for anyone searching this topic, this may be a solution.

    Good luck.

As Phil said, try running as administrator. That’s the only way I run Windows so I don’t see any problems that running as a user may effect. User/Admin problems usualy present as permissions errors, but it’s worth a shot.
I never use the explorer in Vegas – just never needed it. The fact that you can drag a file from the explorer in Vegas to the timeline but not from the Windows explorer does point to a possible registry error. Can you drag from the Windows Explorer to the Project Media window?

You can try running “sfc /scannow” from the command window (start/run/cmd). This does a scan of system files, but I am dubious about sfc being a reliable diagnostic. (I have a problem with splwow64 (a system file) that sfc passes.)
On the other hand it just takes a few minutes to try.

Another tool you might try is Glarysoft Registry Repair. I does find registry problems, mostly orphaned entries, but it does come highly recommended.

Steve, (or should it be Steph?!)it goes back to a previous issue I was having some time ago and for the life of me I have no idea now what it was, sorry. Anyway after seeking assistance I was asked to run SVP in Administrator mode which I did. Along with compatabiltity mode I might add. After that, I was unable to run the program as a ‘User’.

Anyway, just recently my drag and drop option from outside of Vegas suddenly just became non-existent. Very frustrating!

After more research I discovered Roger Garpenholm’s solution (referred previously) which was to turn off Administrator Mode, – and it worked! Why, I have no idea. I am now running Vegas in ‘User’ mode and it seems fine.

And I should also add that, as with my previous posting, my saved editing layouts would disappear each time Vegas crashed. Also very frustrating! A bit of a search revealed that they were being saved, by default, in a ‘Temp’ folder although I did start amending the file location towards the end but again, without success.

Now however, I KNOW where my layouts are being saved and they are NOT disappearing now! Double bonus.

PS – I still use Admin mode for computer amendments – ie. it always wants a password before anything can be changed on it. Bit of a security check really.

Sorry a bit long but only way I can explain it. Just wish I could recall the original issue!!
