Thanks for the help!!
About the alpha import settings, is that in the Media Creation settings?
And yes, I’ll be vigilant about backing up footage on an external drive before editing.

quick follow up:
Since it seems like Brian was right that I shorted pins 1 & 3 by connecting balanced to unbalanced… does that mean I’ve done permanent damage to any of my gear? -
I just went with the Sound Devices cable. Thanks anyways!

To be honest, I have no idea how to unbalanced an xlr cable or what the different pins are or how to manipulate them. I am just going to buy this Sound Devices cable: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/293005-REG/Sound_Devices_XL_3_XL3_Mini_Male_to.html
That should solve my issues, correct?

Hi,
This is the cable: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000068O5K/ref=oh_details_o06_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1I think it is a stereo cable (as it says in the amazon description), however the package says Dual XLR3.
There are no L or R markings on the XLR connectors.I will do the experiment of trying only one connection tomorrow and get back to you.

I went ahead and bought the MixPre-D so we’ll see how it all shakes out. If the sound is as good as Sound Devices’ reputation would have me believe, then I won’t be too upset about only having two inputs. I also like how the mixpre d has xlr outs, 3.5mm tape out, aes out and a mic level out on a ta3 output.
I’ll report back when I’ve had time to take it for a test drive.

Craig,
You mentioned “underpowered” twice. I am using a lavalier mic (condenser) so dynamic mics don’t matter too much to me. The second time you mentioned underpowered, did you mean that it has short battery life or it has trouble providing enough gain? (for say, a wired xlr lavalier mic)Ultimately, what I need help with is rounding up a good list of audio gear for shooting interviews. I’ve already bought mics/xlr cables and now I have $1200 left in my audio budget. What should I buy?
Thanks

Hi Shane,
Thanks for your time/help with this.I need to export for the web so h.264 seems like the most obvious choice. If I export same as source, I can’t upload that to the web. (right?)
Can you tell me how I should be configuring the RGB vs 601/709 option? I tried exporting another h.264 QT file, but this time I chose 709 instead of RGB and the color looked very similar to my monitor in Media Composer. Not exactly the same, but much better than before. Why is this happening? It seems like RGB would be favorable for web delivery…
Also, when importing these dslr clps, I used ama then I transcoded to dnxhd 36. Should I have configured MC to apply a certain “color setting” during importing or transcoding?
I didn’t run into this issue when I worked in Premiere Pro, so this RGB vs 709 option is new to me.
Thanks for any help.
