Chris, while I know you’re asking about shooting with a “t2i”, the subtext is how to shoot motocross.
In my view, the real work of making movies happens in the editing room. In this digital day and age, to a great extent the actual filming is, in reality, data collection. So much can be dealt with in post, particularly when you’re doing the sort of work you’re doing.
Let me suggest two things. First, shoot a little wider, and get closer. This will give you an easier time of following the action and keeping everything in focus. For closer shots of action, you can always cheat a 20% enlargement in post, and almost always get away with it. Secondly, invest $150 bucks in a GoPro camera. Strap it to a driver’s helmet or bike or plant in the middle of the track, and get yourself the kind of shots that you’ll drool over.
At any rate, it’s not the camera that matters so much but rather the shots and, almost above all, the editing, and above all of that, the story.
Lastly, the dirty secret about video is that the sound is more important than the pictures. Get good sound and get yourself a music library. Sound and music can make a still look good.

Back to the Future, it seems. Get ’em while they’re hot.

Thanks for this, Bret. My question was probably not well stated. What I wanted to explore was the notion of not transferring my license and software, but rather keeping my software and merely letting others use it, too, or buy a copy from me along with the serial number. Clearly this would be illegal (and may still be) if Apple was still marketing Final Cut Pro 7. Again, just wonderin’

Your request leads to an obvious question. As Apple is no longer selling or supporting FCP 7 / Studio 3, can one of us “owners” sell copies of our software along with the serial numbers to a third party? Just askin’

Gotta’ say that the advice of continuing with FCP, Color, and the rest of the suite for the next few years makes enormous sense to me. In my experience, learning a new editing system is a week long commitment at worst. Who knows what 2013 will bring? Meanwhile I’ll keep my Adobe CS5 Master Collection current, just in case.

Casey, when you say, “everything has a reddish tint to it, and changing the white balance does not fix it” do you mean that if you set the ND filter and aperture that if you set your white balance off a white card that you get a reddish tint?

Walter, further to “One of the reasons why we’re moving away from FCP 7 in our shop so we can edit with this footage natively.”, what editing software have you settled on?

“Final Cut Pro 7 still works just like it did yesterday and will for some time to come.” How true. How true. Nobody in the audience cares about the editing software.

Too soon to say if it’s the “Best wide-angle lens for Panasonic GH2”, but I just bought a 6.5mm f/1.9 Wollensack Cine-Raptar on eBay. I believe it’s a “C” mount lens, but that’s not for sure. When it arrives, and I get a chance to test it, I’ll let you know how it performs. It may not be the “Best wide-angle lens”, but if it works (and I’m not sure it will), at $31, it may well be the cheapest. And it sure looks pretty.
