December 9, 2009 at 7:08 pm in reply to: HD Project: Sony Vegas or Final Cut Pro? Why?

I’m with Shane, don’t know ‘nuthin about Vegas, so you’d probably be better off asking in the Vegas forum if you can build a system that will handle that many streams of HD in multicam mode (if indeed Vegas has a multicam tool?)

Ultimately this is a question of your comfort level and workflow planning. FCP is not a simple tool to master, but it is not overly complicated if you have a solid foundation in video and NLEs. One advantage I’d see (which may be replicable in Vegas) is the ability to perform your edit with ProRes Proxy media, and then being able to conform the finished edit using uncompressed media. This will allow you to work quickly with a minimum of strain on the CPU or drives and save a lot of the headache you can run in to with high-bitrate data like HD.

Another reason you may be getting pushed by your production partners into the FCP arena is the proliferation of systems and interoperability with major post houses.

This is no-go for Windows users. Try Fuse Meeting and you can at least share screens with PC users. My distance clients love it.

I’d normally never do such a thing, but had to last month (to Snow Leopard and FCS3) and had no problems. Of course, did all of the usual backups etc. It was scary but smooth sailing.

Mr. Malkie has set up a blog that looks to be a great follow for anyone generally interested in this topic:

October 17, 2009 at 12:44 am in reply to: Screen Sharing/Distance session with FCP6?

Thanks guys – FCS3 arrived yesterday and so I dove in for the upgrade, no worries so far and I tested iChat Theater Preview with a friend on a MacBook – worked as promised with absolutely no complications.

Unfortunately running the same test to my client was no-go, as he’s running AIM on a PC. For anyone else who might be trying this, It is (well) documented that:

“Both the host computer playing the video and the remote computer receiving it must have Mac OS X version 10.5 Leopard or later.”

I had read this but wondered that, since I’m connecting through an AIM account myself, it might work with limited functionality, but alas no go. Odd to me given this seems like a simple internet chat thing, but I haven’t really used it before so it’s no surprise I don’t know what’s going on here 😉 Thanks again for the help – will try Fuze and let you know how it goes.

August 21, 2009 at 7:53 pm in reply to: Customizing Your Canvas in FCP

851×886 does not comply to any video standard I’m aware of, and FCP is a video program, so this will be no-go for you. You need to go to Motion or After Effects to work with custom canvasses such as this.

August 19, 2009 at 2:47 pm in reply to: tips for avid editors turning to FCP.

(I think) Shift+ < or > or Shift + [ or ] engages a slide edit on the selected clip, the amount is based on your User Prefs ->Editing -> Multi-Frame Trim Size. Page 320 in Manual II (PDF).

If you’re moving over, or even if you’re not, the manual is fantastic. No way you can read it and not learn something really useful.

Hi Robert – apologies for not reading more closely!

I had a similar problem a few years ago, apparently prompted by a QuickTime update. The fix was DL’ing the latest version of F4M, but I don’t know that this was your problem… I’d make sure you have the latest versions of both. Do let us know if you discover the cause/cure.
