  • The fireworks one is relatively quick, but the others ones I tried are indeed horrific.

  • And if you weren’t lucky enough to own them before, this site might just make you reconsider. That’s some friggin beautiful work there. Thanks a bunch for sharing this link!

    I would recommend:

    Math.sqrt(s1*s1+s2*s2)

instead. For one thing, it is more accurate physically, but that may not be so important; the main issue is that the expression you propose,

    (Math.abs(s1 + s2))/2

can be zero if s1 is positive and s2 is negative, of the same magnitude. Namely, if a layer expands in x and contracts in y, you would get zero blur which may not be what you want. I suppose in most cases the scale values are linked (Xscale=Yscale) anyway and then it doesn’t matter much, but just in case…

I’m not sure what you mean by “After Effects will support Maya, 3D studio, and a bunch of others…”, since actually it doesn’t. You can get 3D objects (as such) into AE with Zaxwerks’ 3D Invigorator Pro, which supports several formats – probably one of them is exportable from Bryce.

The more typical workflow is to render the animation in the 3D app and use AE for compositing. The next step up is to get camera data, null positions etc. from the 3D app into AE, but that doesn’t seem to be what you’re asking about. Bringing in actual 3D objects requires Zaxwerks, and frankly I don’t think it is done very often.

How about multiple vegas or stroke effects? Try to make a single rectangular blob along the mask at a certain offset, then duplicate the effect and use expressions to space the offsets so as to get a dashed line. I’m not in front of AE now and I can’t remember if you can get an index for the effect number within a layer, but if not just duplicate the layer itseld and use a single stroke effect on each layer; then you can use the “index” variable in an expression as a multiplier for the offset position.

Does this do what you’re after, or am I misinterpreting your question?

February 15, 2006 at 5:59 am in reply to: COW Tutorials: After Effects Graph Editor Demystified

This must be the third time you’re complaining about this issue here. I don’t manage this forum, but I suspect it’s not meant for raving and venting frustration. If you have a problem with AE, don’t use it, or write Adobe and complain.

“We just want” – that means, you. “We” want many things, but everybody has their priorities. Sure, it would be nice to have a full-fledged animation engine inside AE – and why not 3D modeling, rendering with Mental Ray and character rigging? – but let’s remember this is a COMPOSITING package that has grown, and is still growing, into a motion graphics powerhouse.

The Graph Editor doesn’t “suck”. It will be put to great use by thousands of professionals worldwide to create some stunning visuals. If you need to control a camera in 3D space “like you want”, do the logical thing and use a 3D package (you wanna use Lightwave, use Lightwave, but if you feel you’re “forced” to use it, consider switching to a more modern app like XSI).

So give us a break, will you?

If the camera is static and only the skateboarder is moving, you can get something similar with the Echo effect I mentioned. If the camera is moving, and you want to echo the skateboarder only, of course you’ll need to roto him.
