hi
the whole 8bit/10bit fuss is because of a simple misunderstanding. when we talk about graphics card it’s about the display precision means the color depth of the GUI monitor. this confusion is because of autodesk as some autodesk system like smoke and lustre uses GUI card to output realtime deliverables as well (via Quadro or Quadro SDI card), so 8bit/10bit matters here.
GUI monitor does not need to be more than 8 bit.
but in case of resolve GUI is only for GUI operations it is never meant to be used for VTR feeding or graded output. Output for grade monitoring or VTR feed is always routed thru video card i.e. Blackmagic decklink card or in case of some old Davincis a DVS card both are always 10 bit comapatible.
another big difference between geforce and quadro card is double precision floating point units. these units are useful for 3d graphics rendering so quadro wins here but davinci does the calculations on single precision floating point (which is 32 bit much much more than 8bit or 10 bit.) so geforce is sufficient for color correction calculations moreover geforce have higher clock rates and are handsomely priced.
the internal calculations are always done at 32 bit and then rescaled to 8 bit or 10 bit for output. you can always check this by using a simple experiment. Grade something down to black so much so that you barely see the image and then grade it up . your picture is almost recovered to its original state. that proves that internal calculations preserve much more data we can see on the screen. its only the end of whole process where the computing part of geforce or quadro card pass the data
To output part of decklink for accurate output
or
to display part of geforce or quadro for approximate output for gui windows.
as much as i understand quadro is recommended for GUI because of the reason only that it has more robust drivers for GUI display and some silly marketing reasons. for GPU processing geforce is always better provided you have put GEFORCEs in separate case with extra cooling and a big power supply to feed power hungry GEFORCEs. geforce 580 gives better performance than 10x pricey quadro6000 in resolve.
hope it helps -
Anyone from blackmagic to comment here plz. if decklink 4k is EOL, plz add support for corvid ultra or dvs in windows version or plz develop 16 bit chips based card which can support 12 bit color and still have margin for future technology. blackmagic has really changed the game of post production from literal “blackmagic” to efficient and viable solutions in the past and hope will continue to do so in future.

a bit of disappointment for me. looks like decklink 4k extreme is an HD extreme on steroids(may be they have just upgraded the firmware). Something like this is already possible for me with my kona 3G.
4k extreme says color depth 10 bit (decklink 4k was 12 bit). No mention of XYZ colorspace, i know i can do a little bit of that using LUT in resolve but then what was the point to make that into their previously announced decklink 4k. Also they are forcing to go for dual 3G speed SDI (they say blackmagic pioneering, how others will go for it is a question.)instead of quad SDI.
This may be the reason they say 4k only at 4:2:2, because of dual link SDI instead of quad link that also this makes a bit of unclear how will it connects to projectors like christie d4k35. i already have decklink extreme 3d+ and i was planning to buy decklink 4k because of 12bit color resolution. (this is now even more relevant because i am promised a software upgrade to make my flanders 12 bit XYZ.)grading even a 4k project with 2k or even hd monitoring was sufficient for me, but now they have removed my temptation point.(possibly????? because specifications are still a bit unclear on their site). however HDMI addition is a good thing to add (but still unclear about exact specifications.) we don’t need analog on this very card. and one more thing i forgot: it says 4k =3840X2160,i think that is quad hd. decklink 4k offered more resolution choices. -

well it all depends upon your project and workflow.
looks like you are not doing it for cinema projection, so you won’t be returning back to .r3d originals which is a different kind of workflow.
but if you are doing it for broadcast project the my suggestion is:
as output is (if) maximum HD 1920×1080 and you have a lot of dSLR footage which is maximum 1920×1080. your L.A. footage is also converted to this resolution so this is the format you should keep.
only left india footage can be easily converted from 24 to 23.978 in redcineX at time of exporting or even conformed to 23.976 (i think) in cinematools (FCP). shot will need reframing but that is also true for 3840×2160 L.A. footage(it’s also not 16:9) so what you did to L.A. RED footage do likewise reframing to india footage. 24->23.976 is a little sync issue but it happens for very long files, you can always fix that while editing (no dialogue can be 10 minutes long uncut). if ADR is to be done sound is no issue.
so you will have all your files 1920×1080@23.976 proresHQ.
keep you project settings to 1920×1080@23.976 and edit as if they were shot this way. as you are not returning to red R3D, proresHQ is you raw. edit and finish on it.but if it is for cinema projection, dslr footage with spherical lenses also needs adjustment as most of the films project at cinemascope which is 2.35:1(actually 2.39:1) so lot of cropping and panning to your already converted footage. also films are projected @ 24fps so you will either need to reconvert your previous footage or conform to 24fps.
“we will fix it in post” = we will fix it in Planning, Organization, Structuring, inTime
he did not mean it for post production. -
when dear? it still has only 5.5 no 6

November 9, 2011 at 6:11 am in reply to: MC6 new features… favorites? disappointments? predictions?still limited to HD resolutions. not even a single word for 2K or 4K. OK monitoring can be HD but ‘K’s are needed for file based workflows like as in resolve .

AVID 6 is super and

i know my fears were genuine but avid has exactly acted like what it should have. many many thanx to avid… thanx mr. greenfield
avid will be the king of NLE again. -

you should not disagree on this. should run avid on qualified operating system. it’s not avid’s fault, maybe apple’s. if car manufacturer says their car run on diesel, it’s not their fault that you are trying to run it with petrol.
