I don’t know did I get right the thing here, but have you tried to export 32 bit TGA image sequence from AE?
If I have something to do with an alpha channel I never export any avi or qt.I always export image sequence, because I believe that avi or qt on PC has not correct alpha channel, I guess that’s why you have color and/or luma shift. And did you use “remove mate” filter in PPRO? Its necessary to use it when your mate is black or white otherwise you can expect or dirty edges, or some color shift depending on color of your mate. -

Read what adobe and intel writes carefuly, there’s huge amount such kind of info. If you’re to lazy to do that, I’ll tell you, that with PPRO you will not feel any difference is it dual core or xeon, or dual core xeon. PPRO doesn’t support 64 bit transfer yet, when it will – you’ll fell the difference between new intel cpu’s. If you’re not working with 3d software and minimal with AE or similar, but you want to edit HD I would suggest you to buy what adobe recommends, even if you wouldn’t be great and new at cpu. And remember, that not everything depends on cpu.

I’m now editing with PPRO on PC with P4HT, 2GB DDR, SATA2. I have PPRO crashed less than 5 times a month (On this PC, I’m editing weekly 0,5 hour length tv show). I know it isn’t mac and FCP, but for me it’s ok. Recently I’ve tired mac and FCP because I’m going to upgrade to intel dual core. But I wasn’t sure on which platform and I’ve heard tales about mac stability an anything else… I would consider without doubt that OS is a thing which needs to get accustomed. But just few word about fcp. If you’re going from PPRO to FCP forget about mp3, it’s not professional :), forget about any image sequence:) you’ll need to convert it with quicktime, and another great things you’ll know what to change speed, or still exporting is not so simple as you could think of it. And if you about stability – try to import, lets tell, about 60 psd into your fcp project and look how stable it becomes 🙂
But what I should say, find a place to try PPRO on new PC and find a place to try fcp on G5 or smthng and consider yourself.
For me – fcp is ok if you’re going from 6.x Premiere, but not from PRO. -
It’s a bit hard to say something really useful in this particular situation without touching the machine and the project. Do you see these black frames while you’re playing footage in PPRO ? If no – it will be something with export settings, if you get interlaced frames (when working with 24p) it could only be caused by project/export incorrect settings. It could be kind a problem with plugins/effects. Maybe each chapter where black frames appear have a particular effect/plugin applied ? Have you tried to remove color corrections or whatever you’ve done and render ? Have you tried to create new PPRO project based on 24p and import that one you experience problem with ? Or even reinstall PPRO ?

My suggestion – try to import project into AE, and render.
For me would be easier to suggest you if I knew what were capture settings and what are project you’re working in settings. Looks like you’re working with mpegs. -
From this screen shot I see that footage in the source monitor that should be 16:9 is 4:3, I guess you told PPRO interpret this footage as wide screen, so “border” happens. This “black border” comes from interpreting your footage from 4:3, which is already with black border, as 16:9, if you look closer to a program monitor you’ll see that that guy in “black border” is “squeezed”. I don’t know how you captured, but I guess not with a PPRO, or you done some kind of aspect changes manually, if so – undo them.
Suggestions:
1. If all your footage is already 4:3 from 16:9, then work in 4:3.
2. Capture with PPRO and work in 16:9.
3. If manual changes were done – undo and work in 16:9. -
No it can’t. Reference movies are the thing in mac and it’s *.mov’s. There no such thing as reference *.avi in PPRO. But I don’t miss it much. Can you tell particular situation you faced? Why do you need reference?

Why don’t you try to export this in it’s native format ant then use some kind of mpg encoder and dvd authoring? I think it’s always easier than to do with PPRO.
