    Hi,
I recently shot a documentary on DV 16:9 on a Panasonic DXV100a. I am quite new to Premiere Pro and was wondering why once my work is on the timeline it appears in the Monitor window as having a black border all the way round. The project is PAL DV Widescreen 48Khz.

I could be wrong, but I think the 100a doesn’t do true anamorphic-
so the video is actually just 4×3 letterbox. So your project should
be a 4×3 project w/.9 PAR, not 16×9 w/1.2 PAR. That would cause
what you are seeing if your project settings are at 16×9.

Like I said, my brain might be faulty on this though…

From this screen shot I see that footage in the source monitor that should be 16:9 is 4:3, I guess you told PPRO interpret this footage as wide screen, so “border” happens. This “black border” comes from interpreting your footage from 4:3, which is already with black border, as 16:9, if you look closer to a program monitor you’ll see that that guy in “black border” is “squeezed”. I don’t know how you captured, but I guess not with a PPRO, or you done some kind of aspect changes manually, if so – undo them.
    Suggestions:
    1. If all your footage is already 4:3 from 16:9, then work in 4:3.
    2. Capture with PPRO and work in 16:9.
    3. If manual changes were done – undo and work in 16:9.

I shot my movie on a 100A in 16:9. It looks as if your project settings are incorrect. I had no problem with my 16:9, it has always displayed properly. re-create a new project with correct settings, such as 16:9, PAL if that is waht your using.

    These are my settings:

All was captured with Premiere Pro and no manual aspect changes to my knowledge.
Opened a new 4:3 project and all the footage fits – so it must have captured as 4:3 but why?
Is it because I have captured using a different DV device?

The capture device really does not matter, according to most of the people here that I have heard. Are you sure it was shot 16:9 in camera? Those project settings look correct.

Oops, I missed the PAL part….

It seems like your project settings are correct as others have indicated
IF the video was shot anamorphic. If you play back your footage on a
TV/monitor that is 4:3, does the video look tall and skinny and fill the
entire raster? If so, then it was shot anamorphic and your settings
should be working. But if you see the video displayed as letterboxed
and you don’t have a 16:9 switch enabled somewhere on your tv, then it was shot
letterbox and your settings you posted above will result in what you are
    seeing.

BTW, does anyone here know if the 100A does shoot true anamorphic?
    I’m curious now.

After some research it turns out that the Panasonic DVX camera do not have a 16:9 CCD (the HDVX do) and so do not shoot true 16:9 without the anamorphic lens. My mistake. Thanks for all the help.

I have been having a similar problem. My footage was shot using a Sony Beta SX camera with an anamorphic lens. All seemed to be okay until I de-interlaced a shot, a black border appeared all around the frame, and it reduced in size when displayed.
