Thanks Curtis – I do have the search tool in Mail but when I disabled SL I lost the ability to search my mail. Maybe I did something wrong?

Quick question – when you diable spotlight and use easy find, does it seach e-mail in the Mail application? I used TCC to kill spotlight and was unalbe to do any sort of search in Mail, making it difficult to find stuff.

Every day I check to see if there is an apple update – it is no fun having to recreate all my bookmarks in FF. So far I have tried everything possible including a reinstall of 10.4.1 but to no avail. It crashes most often when opening up the laptop from sleep and Safari was open. It ocassionally happen though at random times for no apparent reason. Other attempted solutions include deleting the preferences for Safari, repairing permissions, deleting the Safari icons and running cron scripts and using Tiger Cache Cleaner’s cleaning routines to remove any caches that may be causing proplems. I am open to any other suggestions.

I have nothing to say to those who are using it successfully – I am happy that it is working for you and others. For me it is not and switching to Firefox has fixed the problem.
Firefox has had vulnerablities but it is certainly safer than IE5. I may be wrong but I think that Safari has had vulneralbities too that get fixed with security updates and point upgrades to the OS.

Under Tiger, Safari constantly crashes my laptop and I have to do a hard reboot. A switch to Firefox has taken care of it. It is a much safer and more advanced alternative to IE5!

We have found STP to be very processor intensive and have had frequent crashes with it doing simple things like digitizing 45 minutes of dialogue. Till there is an update we have switched to Cubase LT which came free with our FW A/D Firebox and it has worked flawlessly. All the reviews seem to be very positive about STP so the problem probably lies with our machine which may not be up to spec although an apple moderator did mention on their forum that they were aware of the resource issue – see:

Try installing the new verison of QT – 7.0.1 and see if it helps. It just showed up in my software update.

Must have been a one off hitch as a relaunch of Safari fixed it.

  • See my post further down about FCP workflow under tiger. Either you have to drag your external drive into the privacy tab every single time you mount it (and then it is best to check activity monitor to make sure that it really has quit indexing) or run the terminal command to stop indexing.
Do you want SL indexing your 1 TB external drive everytime you start digitizing media? But if you put it in the privacy tab and you need to find a file fast (the client asks you to pull up version 3 of their logo they sent you 7 months ago) on that drive, you can’t use SL (and command F does not seem to work on drives that are put in the privacy tab either.) I am sure that Apple will get around to fixing this at some point but till they do it is an annoying workaround with limitations.

Go to http://www.synthetic-ap.com and they have a free application that you just drag and drop your DV movie on and it sets the hi qual flag for you – handy when you have a bunch of clips. Not sure if it works under QT 7 though.
