If you’re looking to purchase an Avid system and you’re just starting out, an Xpress Pro system is in a bit more accessible price range. You can probably pick up a turnkey Xpress with a few bells and whistles for $5-10k. If you just want to familiarize yourself with the software and really want to get something on a student budget- you can buy Xpress DV for around $500, or even download Avid FreeDV for free.

Thanks, I nixed the Norton install on the Avids.

Since you mention it- What AV app would you reccomend? I have Norton at home and it does suck up a lot of system resources. I’ve been thinking about getting something else, but there are a lot of choices out there and I’m not sure what’s decent and what’s crap…I’ve always used Norton. Thanks again.

I use the S-Video out on a DVD player, then de-select the deck button in the capture tool and basically crash record into Avid. You can’t control the deck or anything but it works.

Thanks guys for your replies; I’ve taken some time off, but when I am back in front of an Avid, I’m going to put your advice to work. I appreciate your help.

I got it- someone had changed something in the security. I went into the security setting, set to default settings. This allowed me to move the files, etc. So I then moved to another folder re-booted, dropped them back into the original OMFI folder, deleted the databases and voila! Everything is back online.
Thanks for your help, I appreciate it

Thanks Bill, I’m going to check Xytec out. We used to use an old version of Foxpro, but switched over to access. In researching, I’m finding that it’s possible to integrate barcoding with Access- so I’m going to do a little more research on that as well. Anyway, thanks I appreciate your help.

Thanks; I think I’m going to try to go with one of a couple of places I found in Atlanta that offer Media Composer Packages. I looked on Avid’s website, I just wanted to see what else was out there and maybe get some insight from people who had actually gone through some of these courses. Hopefully I can sell it to my boss now.
