  • I tried connecting mac FCP external video firewire output –> mac firewire input (with iChat prefs = line in).

So far I’ve been unsuccessful because I can’t select “External video firewire NTSC” in my FCP because it doesn’t recognize a camera/deck control…the 2nd mac must somehow serve as the “camera.”

Do I need to restart the 2nd mac? Reconnect firewire cabling?

Otherwise, I’ll have to continue with the 2 A2D conversions as I’d set up before.

  • Thanks for your help.

This does not go all the way in setting up an FCP monitoring solution. This was just for an analog source (VHS tape). For a digital/Final Cut Pro signal, you do need two computers.

For this Mac to Mac remote review, 2 computers and 2 AtoD conversions are needed to transmit.

    Computer 1:
    – One computer with final cut pro > External video playback > firewire > DVcamera or deck (digital to analog conversion)
    – from first deck, output analog to a second deck with analog input.
    – from second deck, output via firewire into second computer.
    Computer 2:
    – in iChat preferences in the video pane, the “microphone” setting should automatically recognize whatever your “camera” is. The “camera” of course can be your actual miniDV camera or a deck etc.
    – from your iChat buddy list, choose “video chat” with your desired buddy…if they don’t have a camera, then it will be a “one way video chat”.

I tried remote review to a PC with AOL instant messenger with mixed success. The stream is choppy, lower res, and the image size is not scalable as far as I can tell.

Perhaps there is a workaround to the above method that is more simple, but the quality is very good.

Thanks for all of your help.

I spoke to AJA tech support, they said best to stick with 10.3.8 but that the problem was with Xserve RAIDs only.

Apparently 10.3.9 was creating write-to-disk issues and resulting in dropped frames on the Xserve drives.

I have been experiencing the same problem with a Lacie 500gb I have formated Mac OS Extended (Journaled)…
any .MOV media is without a trace after transferring from my primary media drive.
also, I encounter seemingly arbitary error messages when I copy files, and if it does let me copy, it similarly seems to disappear from my drive.
Is this purely a matter of the drive formatting?
This will be corrected upon reformatting using the Mac OS Extended ?

    Thanks in advance.
I joined creativecow today to look into this very problem and it has been helpful to find someone having already addressed the issue.
