Although Steve was half joking, I think you missed the point. He wasn’t saying that because it is FCP X (10) that it is a sequel to iMovie, but because if you load up FCPX it says FCPX v10.0 rather than FCPX v1.0 as you would expect.

The revision was just a simple typographical error.

April 21, 2010 at 9:38 am in reply to: Have your Corporate video Prices come down since Recession? One thing that seems apparent to me is that many potential clients aren’t aware of the following.
If the video has a purpose for being it will either:
1. make the company more money than it cost to produce.
2. save more money than it cost to produce. Many clients only seem to see the price. I see many production companies on a price reduction spree, but in real terms such reductions don’t really make much of a dent in the ROI over the lifespan of the video. So I think better client education is in order.
I’ve been finding out recently that many companies simply haven’t thought of using video. It isn’t that they have thought it too expensive, but that they simply hadn’t thought of it, full stop.
I also think that because of the number of students a new, cheap as chips companies, we have to offer something a cut above. A camera on a tripod simply doesn’t cut it any more. While I would never suggest eye candy over content, clients *do* like to see their money on screen. Effective lighting, and I mean effective lighting, like you would find on network TV, jibs, Steadicam.
I am moving heavily into the latter because it not only allows me to cover more ground, more quickly, during shoots, but it also gives a high end polished look to things.

I’m not sure of the wisdom of using cameras that only just produces 600TVL of resolution in either direction if you are shooting for HD.

[Craig Seeman] “Thanks for noting that. Simon, where do things stand with analog vs digital transmission in the UK? In the USA in a matter of weeks all TV broadcast transmission with be digital. Analog TV broadcast will be dead.”
The digital switchover has already started in parts. I think at present that have switched off one analogue transmitter in Scotland. They are performing the transition in stages. It started in November and will finish in 2012. Although I would imagine that it would have gained so much momentum by then that the vast majority would be on digital by then. Though having said that I do not know of anyone personally who still watches analogue anyway.
Digital TV seems to have quite a high penetration here since it has been broadcasting for quite a number of years now. The picture quality is bloody awful though via the digital terrestrial transmissions. I will be fitting a Freesat dish (free to view satellite) which also contains a number of free HD channels from the BBC, Channel 4 etc.

14:9 cropping is only used for analogue terrestrial transmission. Almost all programming in the UK on the digital transmissions is broadcast 16:9 anamorphic.

I have the 195 for my EX3. The 197 is only about a cm wider. The 195 gives the camera a snug fit, but if you are using the VF Gadgets tripod plate and/or a matte box you may want to go for the 197. But apart from minor differences in size they are pretty much the same bag.
The 195 doesn’t come with a trolley, but it can be used with one I presume as it has a sort of thick strap thing on it labelled “trolley”. I don’t do a lot of flying so i couldn’t comment on its carry on capability.

I have been thinking about this dilemma a lot recently. It has occurred to me that if you use the SDHC recording method instead of SxS you could just hand over the card at the end and just charge it as media. The cost of the types of SDHC cards that work with this method are not hugely different to the cost of XDCAM discs a couple of years ago. Admittedly you may be talking £25 for 16GB rather than £20 for 23GB (a couple of years ago. The discs are much cheaper now). But I still think it is very doable.

I am having a similar issue with Vegas 8 not recognising sound from a Quicktime Mov file.
I can solve the issue with the bad quality picture though. This is because Quicktime has a ‘preview’ mode for DV files. You can go into the Quicktime Player preferences and change this by going to the General tab and ticking “Use High Quality Settinag When Available”

There is just one problem. Although FCP now accepts the 422 50Mbps footage from the PDW-700, the XDCAM transfer unfortunately does not, yet.
I just tried it with the footage I shot the other week with the 700. Because Sony have not yet updated the XDCAM transfer software to be able to import the 50Mbps footage correctly, the footage still can’t be used with FCP.
