I’ve made you a quick FCP X Generator version so you can play around with it more easily. Here are the published parameters:

The Bump Map filter isn’t doing anything with the colours, it’s just “stirring up” the layer it’s applied to. The colours come from the two gradients and I’m masking between them so we get a nice variation. So dive into the gradients if you want to change up the colours.

Have a look at this test project – maybe there are some things in there that would be useful for you. The Bump Map filter gives a nice displacement effect (driven by a modified Clouds generator) and the Indent filter on top of that adds an element of depth.

The easiest way to reverse the timing of a Clone layer is to apply the Retiming/Reverse Behavior.

You can also do it by reversing the keyframes in the Keyframe Editor but that’s probable more advanced than you want or need.

[Robin S. Kurz] “it’s something maybe 0.2% of users actually NEED”

The puppet tool in After Effects is probably the most commonly used feature and it has limitless possible applications. It’s a feature that, once you discover it, you will use all the time, even in cases where the audience won’t be aware that you’ve used it.

[Robin S. Kurz] “Even if Apple DID come out with their own version in a year or two. Which, as I said, I don’t see ever happening.

Agreed. It’s not something it’s remotely plausible to think that Apple would ever offer. But if that tells us anything, it tells us about Apple’s approach to Motion.

As ever, this is a beautifully designed, very powerful and very affordable plug-in from the amazing team at motionvfx that any serious Motion user will definitely want to grab.

Glad it helped. There are doubtless other ways of doing this (e.g. with a Replicator) but I think this is probably the easiest and closest to what you want.

Matte Choker, Simple Choker, Minimax …

Blur+Curves Adjustment of the Alpha is also sometimes a useful option.

    What great ideas!

Thanks for sharing this. The art of brevity is a fantastic discipline to try and master.

Note that the Light Metal gradient in the gradients library is already set up with a bunch equidistant alternating tabs so you could use this and then apply a Color Curves to tighten up the mask that you apply to your Gradient. Here’s an example project:

Try using the Concentric Shapes generator like this:

Animating the Phase and the Width works well and obviously you can set your own colours to the “gradient”.

Alternatively you could create a gradient using an actual Gradient Generator and use the luminance of the Concentric Shapes generator to mask it which is an easier way to set it up and then you could also animate the gradient if you wanted.
