[Oliver Peters] ” don’t think MC 5.5 is qualified for 10.6.7 either”

I am using an ATI Radeon card as well but also not running 10.6.7 either (still on 10.6.6). Thanks for the heads-up on this.

[Mike Chedwick] “as any serious editor knows…it’s not the tool it’s the person using it”

Seriously, Mike, there ought to be a fines penalty system in place for anyone who uses this tired and complacent old chestnut of an argument 😉

I am and always have been prepared to use any “tool” I am obliged to use to get the job done, way back to when I started editing on film and tape before NLE’s were even thought of. Inevitably I will continue to work with Media Composer in the future, but as I said it will not be my NLE of choice any time soon.

My guess is that MC is the preferred option for editors who actually like to work at a slow pace rather than push the limits of what is possible in terms of speed of operation – an opinion based on having observed the working practices of many, many professional AVID editors down the years.

[Oliver Peters] “your stability issue isn’t typical”

In fairness, I should say that a) as I mentioned before, I didn’t have the opportunity to do a clean install which may have helped possibly, and b) I shouldn’t have referred to stability – the issue is not crashing, but rather what I am guessing are memory issues in that a few hours into a session the UI starts behaving erratically and unpredictably, along with “hanging” temporarily.

I should also add that it is significantly slow to save bins (to the point of interrupting the workflow), something that has always been the case with AVID in my experience across a very wide variety of machines and set-ups.

April 29, 2011 at 8:25 pm in reply to: Can’t open earlier FCP projects?

[Andy Mees] “We know that iMovie can export projects in FCP 7 XML format”

It’s only fair to say of course that XML export from iMovie is very, very limited indeed and rather suggests how at the point in time of the release of iMovie 11 at least, they haven’t resolved the issue of how to deal with exporting the Magnetic Timeline. Only the sync audio tracks can be exported and a single layer of video and everything else is unsupported – as explicitly mentioned in the export dialogue. This is not to say that the issue is unresolvable, but rather that it’s probably not the simplest thing in the world!

But hey, just playing Devil’s Advocate again here, sorry 😉

  • Well, strictly speaking, iMovie can perform perform “auto motion stabilization on ingest” but when I last looked it didn’t have a tracker! Not to say there won’t be one on FCPX, but I’d have thought this is just a variant on SmoothCam, isn’t it?

  • [Chris Kenny] ” products where coordination with external companies makes secrecy impossible”

Hmmm, yes, well, since you raise the point, you could if you wanted to be a Devil’s Advocate argue that Apple could have done everyone a favour by involving third parties vendors (Blackmagic, AJA, not to mention plug-in developers) this time around – some considerable measure of panic has been created because of this. This would not have been entirely at odds with industry practice.

The point stands however that the “sneak peak” was way too showbusiness – distinctly too little business. And after all, most of us are trying to run businesses and don’t appreciate being condescended to, no matter who is doing the condescending.

April 23, 2011 at 6:39 pm in reply to: Has anyone tried the AVID offer …

Have downloaded the trial version for now and spent the afternoon setting it up and getting back into the swing of Media Composer after a few months not using it at all …

… and came to the realization of what insanely good value you get from Apple with FCP!!!!!

Conversely for $999 spent with AVID (or considerably more in the case of us non-US citizens, as I’ve already mentioned), you get a really, really bog-standard NLE with precious little in the way of extras – and the world’s most shockingly awful colour corrector! And don’t talk to me about the i/o limitations!

When people do the AVID/FCP comparison, they are always comparing the top of the range AVID spec with all the expensive extras. The software only version doesn’t begin to compare with the functionality of FCP – at many times the price! When you factor in the full FCS suite, the disparity becomes absolutely vast.

And it’s a loss less fun to cut on!

  • I think they were very naive if they didn’t foresee the attention this event would attract and how every detail of it would be pored over by the FCP community – but at the same time I do agree it is unreasonable to expect them to have answered some of the questions that are being asked of them here.

Overall, they’d probably have done better in this case to have kept their powder dry but I can understand the market pressures that made them decide to do it. I can’t help feeling that on balance their mistake was to have treated their FCP client base just the same way as they treat the consumer client base – a little too much showbusiness, a little too short on substance. Generally most of us like, and need, facts and figures and details. I hope they learn this presentation lesson for next time.

  • Yup, they haven’t done it before and they didn’t do it terribly well, given they were speaking to a worldwide audience of professional (and not so professional) editors), who had reasons good and less good for expecting it to be better. It’s perfectly OK to accept the possibility of this without the sky falling in around you!

  • In between the brutal scepticism of the disgruntled camp, the despair of the headless chickens, and the happy-clappy cheerleading of the Apple optimists, there is surely a likelihood that a) at the very least FCPX won’t be a disaster with loads of interesting and innovative stuff to sink our teeth into (especially if you’re not already familiar with iMovie, but a good deal else as well that no-one knows anything about), b) there will be lots of thing not right with it on day one which means many of us won’t be able to use it until these are addressed, and c) Apple made a pretty lousy fist of their “sneak peak” which is a bit odd for a company so expert in this kind of thing (but then maybe they misjudged their audience somewhat).

Whatever, all this colourful difference of opinion makes for a great forum to follow 😉
