[Craig Seeman] “I don’t see Color going away at all.”

Do Apple really want to compete with what Blackmagic are now doing with Resolve and the price point they are fighting at?

Maybe … but personally I very much doubt the pro-grading game appeals to them that much any more in the light of these developments. Let’s not forget Color was always just a third party acquisition and there hasn’t been much sign that Apple have embraced its ongoing development very enthusiastically.

But, heck, I sure hope I’m wrong!

[Richard Herd] “I do hope the capability is part of the uber app”

Personally I reckon an uber app is the worst possible outcome.

There are very good reasons why compositing, grading, and audio finishing apps look and feel so different from each other and from editing apps. They each have totally different UI requirements in order to maximize the efficiency of their individual processes.

Bundling them all together into one compromise app is going to result in the least best solution for everything. I have no doubt this will appeal to the users who don’t really care that much about dedicated audio or grading or compositing capability (and I totally recognize there are many such FCP users out there), but it will be a sad day for the rest of us – few as we may be.

Almost as sad as the day Apple consigned Shake to the trashcan of history!

But what can you do? No-one can have everything they want …

“You may have less need to go to Color” …

… because you won’t be able to!

    My guess anyway.

I’ll be stunned if FCPX 1.0 has any kind of integration with any of the existing apps and if I were into that kind of thing I’d be taking bets right now.

    😉

  • [Michael Kammes] “Is it safe to assume you are using AMA?”

    Hi Michael

Are you saying that there are circumstances in which AMA misbehaves? If so, it would be great to hear what these might be.

    Thanks.

Found the problem. Turns out it was having trouble with four linked AMA files (short titles) which was causing the whole sequence AND the bin AND the project to become unusable!

Removing the titles from the timeline and importing them instead of linking to them solved the issue. Annoying to discover that AMA can be flaky like this, and am only glad that in this case the fix was easily accomplished.

  • OK, I’ll admit it – there are quite a few things that the new MC does that are genuinely impressive, most especially the multi-format timeline, which I think is very well implemented. And AMA has really revolutionised the whole AVID workflow in ways that make for substantial speed savings for me over the old system. I have also become really attached to the Smart Tool, although it does involve some rather fiddly mouse work that I could do without. Very much a step in the right direction for my money.

On the downside, I have to stick by my position that it is not nearly as stable and reliable as its “trusted professional application” tag would make out. I had a very simple transcoding job to do which turned into a headache of many hours duration, involving a complete system restart after almost every single successfully transcoded clip. This sort of behaviour frankly doesn’t surprise me (after many years experience of AVID media management across a huge variety of systems, before anyone starts making helpful suggestions!), but it’s a major annoyance to come across it in V5.5!

One thing that puzzled me about all this (though it’s more than likely me being stupid) is the claim that you could “carry on working while ingesting” – surely if there is no transcoding going on then “ingesting” ought to take no time at all? Or have I completely missed the point?

  • [Oliver Peters] “a constant save state”

… which is what we will be having with FCPX, if iMovie is anything to go by. Should be good!

To be honest, I’ve always found MC to be unacceptably slow in saving whatever the machine but (naively optimistically!) I’d rather expected to find an improvement in this department.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with my configuration in this respect – it’s just another thing that irks me about the software.
