  • Great tip, thanks Craig – I was sceptical that this would be a workable workaround for losing I/O points but the way you’re now recommending doing it it’s actually a very powerful way of working. It’s like keeping a running log of all your Browser edit activity. (The only issue is I can see is the Favourites folder getting unwieldy pretty quickly in the course of a day’s work).

I’d still like the I/O points to stick though as well, but then I’m greedy 😉

Absolutely – devising workarounds has always been the fun part for me! Life would be so dull if everything worked the way it should!

[Tony Silanskas] “a currently unusable form (like the Audio Properties of Music, Dialog, Sound Effects, etc.).”

Actually, there’s been a lot of talk about this “hidden feature” but I think from looking more closely at it today that it’s more of a toy feature for routing your audio in a surround context – the “default” audio output configuration – any easy, no-brainer routing solution that sends the dialogue to the centre, the music left and right and whatever. It may well do a kind of fake surround with stereo stuff (e.g. “ambience”) – but not having surround monitoring connected to my MBP I’m not really in a position to answer that definitively. I don’t now think it’s the kind of audio grouping thing that a lot of people have been hoping it might be.

Though I could be very wrong 😉

[Tony Silanskas] “you used to zero out all your audio and export each section”

Yup, used to do that in Media Composer almost 20 years ago now! Ah, don’t you just love progress 😉

  • This also got me thinking about how we need to view the relationship between video and audio clips in terms of timecode – in FCP7 we could look at the timecode overlay and see the source code for everything at a glance and in comparison with other tracks (so much better than the Media Composer system where you could only see a very limited amount at a time). There doesn’t seem to be any provision for this kind of thing as yet. For me it’s pretty crucial unfortunately.

  • [Simon Ubsdell] “how you’d affect the levels independently of a multi-track clip”

Actually your first suggestion was the right one – what you need to do is to break the clip apart (ShiftCmd/G) and then you’ve got as many of the individual channels as you want, depending on what you’ve selected in the Audio Inspector/Channel Configuration. If you’ve selected 4 Stereo for example, that’s what you’ll get when you break the clip apart on the Timeline, four tracks that can be individually manipulated (trimmed to different lengths, volume adjusted etc.).

But despite its dramatic name “break apart” doesn’t actually break too much – if you want to pack the tracks back up along with the video you can easily make a compound clip (Opt/G).

Thanks, Michael, for asking the question – I’d never have got as far as investigating otherwise!

[Robert Ober] “Are folks saying that if I bring corrected audio (same timing) back in that I cannot reconnect it to the storyline?”

I don’t think anybody has said that – there is no reason that you can’t import a stereo audio file and lay it up to your timeline and even slip the sync if you want. The really big problem is that you can’t get audio out in the first place in any non-linear fashion – only by exporting selected audio files, which is a long way from being satisfactory.

Do what it says – move the Motion 4 application to a new folder (call it “Motion 4” why not? Go crazy) and start again. It should work fine.

That’s just wild – but you’re absolutely right. Crazy stuff that makes no sense. But hey it’s something new I’ve just learnt, thanks.

Or use Shift/Cmd/G to break it apart …
