A very biased personal opinion:
Softimage DS was an absolutely brilliant product that was way ahead of its time – and then a company called AVID came along and bought it out and it stopped developing meaningfully and started become crankier and crankier. In many respects it’s still really great and can do a lot of what Smoke can do – it’s a really great nodal compositor in addition to everything else it can do.
But it’s hardly a tool for everyday offline editing – any more than, in my opinion Smoke would be. You’d only be using a fraction of its power and it’s not the greatest editing tool out there anyway, any more than Smoke is.
As I said, very a very personal opinion …

Unzip the file and copy the contents (the complete folders) to: User/Movies/Motion Templates/Effects. Preferably make a new folder inside that (e.g. My Downloaded Effects) for your downloaded effects from third parties.

I think this is me not being clear about my names for things. You need to use the Border Scale control to get an equal border. It looks like you are using the Mask.X.Position control which is there to offset the position of the crop – if you just want an even split of each screen then leave this control where it is.
Or is that not what you meant?

a) pop-up option for 3-way split;
b) border option with color control;
c) shear option to angle edges of split;
d) full controls for scale and position of split screen images;

Not as elegant as something Brendan (Motion-Man) Gibbons would make, but here’s a quick version of a dual split screen template for you.
Put it in your User/Movies/Motion Templates/Effects folder and use it as an Effect.
It uses drop zones for your source images so click on the wells for each and then select the image you want from the Browser and Appply.
It uses a shape as image mask so the same “crop” controls both images and you can move it where you like. You can also have the split running horizontally as well as vertically if you use the yPos control and zero out the xPos control. There are also controls for reframing and resizing the source images.
It’s just a work-in-progress and there’s lots that could be improved, e.g. borders, feathering, image rotate, a way of using the same template to generate a variety of different split numbers, and some fancy rigging, etc. …
