    Updated as 5 Panel only version as FCPX doesn’t like the complex rigging involved in having the three different options within one Effect.

    2622_ethan5paneleffect.zip

    It seems as though you can fairly quickly get too complex with the rigging options inside Motion for FCPX to handle – which is a shame. Seems especially true when there are a lot of linked attributes. Also Behaviors don’t seem to translate as smoothly as they ought.

    Ethan, if you like this version then I can look into making the other two.

    Ooops – not there yet obviously! All seems fine in Motion but some stuff not working as it should in FCPX …

    [David Battistella] “I’ve just spent the day looking through a bunch of old stills shot on FUJI VELVIA films stock. The RED’s were always so perfect in Velvia.”

    I’d have to agree – trying to match the almost magical effects of classic film stocks with digital trickery just somehow is never quite going to cut it! There’s something about the sheer unpredictability of the way they react that is missing from the process – especially if for example they’d sat on a shelf too long. I’ve got a can of Super 16mm that I’m keeping from over ten years ago that I want to try out one day …

    Hi Ethan

    I reckon it’s close to being finished unless there’s anything else you want added or need changing:

    2621_ethanpanelfilter.zip

    It now has full controls for:

    – selecting 3-panel, 4-panel or 5-panel display;
    – onscreen controls for “gap” positions;
    – Fade In/Out durations;
    – Fade In/out Offsets.

    Rigging up the OSCs was as interesting challenge, as was working out the simplest way to do the rigging for the 3 different panel layouts.

    Hope it all works for you – let me know how you get on!

    Was there anything from Brendan’s version that you’d like me to try and include as well?

    Now with sliders for fade in/out duration.

    [Brendan Gibbons] “You know what, I think I feel the “effect creation” equivalent of writers block coming on…lol”

    Surely not possible!!!!! But if it is the case then that’s probably a good thing as you might be able to spend the time down the pub!

    [Brendan Gibbons] “Here’s a slower version of the panel effect.”

    Have you tried using the Build-in/Out function? This would mean that you could control the fade duration and still have the animation work whatever the length of the clip … At least that’s what I’m working on.

    Hi Ethan

    Here’s a version of the Panel Filter with onscreen controls for the Gaps and a border.width control.

    2619_ethanpanelfilter.zip

    I’ll be working on making a 4 and 3 panel option from within the same filter selectable via Pop-Up.

    I know Brendan has probably already perfected his and made a half dozen other Effects this morning, but the rest of us are only mortal and it’s hard to keep up!

    [David Battistella] “This one probably is not possible.”

    Everything is possible …

    Except getting a result quicker than Brendan!!!!

    Yikes, Brendan – you’re so quick I can’t keep up. I have however managed to rig a version that has onscreen controls for Ethan’s gaps which seems like a nice interactive way of doing it. Will post shortly.
