  • [Jeremy Garchow] “VideoCompany#1 takes it over from there?”

No, Video Company#1 dropped the ball and went off to play with the opposition, don’t you remember?

Still, good for BMD – great news!

  • [Jeremy Garchow] “You forgot the picture of the color board, the shape masks and keyframe ability of them, the exposure and saturation. So really we are comparing this:”

No, I’m talking about the keyer not the shape mask – these are two completely unrelated things (and before you point it out I do understand that you can qualify a key with a mask, but the point stands nonetheless).

The FCPX Color Board keyer isn’t up to scratch and despite all your excellent forensic skills you can’t persuade me that it is!

OK, so the 3-way didn’t have shape masks, but in every other respect (except, I’m prepared to admit, if anyone will prove it to me quantitatively, image quality) the Color Board is functionally inferior. Are we really having this argument … ?

Delete it from your User/Motion Templates/Effects folder which is presumably where you put it in the first place …

I have checked it out this end, however, and I can’t seem to see any problems with this Effect – it certainly doesn’t crash my ageing laptop if that’s anything to go by.

October 14, 2011 at 3:06 pm in reply to: New Improved TKY Free “Power Grade” Effect

    Hi Mark

    Hope it’s useful to you!

I think this does replace my previous grading filters, certainly any earlier version called Power Grade, as well as the Shadows/Highlights Adjustment Effect which I have folded into this, so I’d say probably it’s a good idea to bin the others.

I would warn you that this is quite heavy to process because of everything that’s going on in it. Also it’s there’s some complex stuff going on inside which means that although I’ve done my best to QC everything, there may still be things that aren’t quite right. If you find anything that bugs you do let me know.

Meanwhile I will try and do a quick video showing how it all works.

  • [Jeremy Garchow] “[Simon Ubsdell] “I do dispute that this keyer is better than the old 3-way version – I really do. At least in its current state.”

Eh, we will agree to disagree. Again! :-D”

On second thoughts, I wanted to come back at you on this.

    We are comparing this:

    … with this:

… and you’re saying that the 3-way doesn’t give you a better keyer. Is that really a sustainable point of view?

On extra point I wanted to bring up about this which is very salient and that’s that the FCPX keyer is a chroma-key only, whereas in most grading situations a luma-key is just as important if not more so.

Which is why I made a Motion 5 Effect specifically to take care of this (among quite a few other things):

I stand by my position that the FCPX Keyer needs a whole lot more work to even begin to be convincing. Sorry 😉

[Geert van den Berg] “I think that the next version of Logic Pro will also have FCPXML import.”

Actually, I am very much hoping that the new Logic will be a useful missing piece of the puzzle.

However, I still need to be able to create final mixes in ProTools – and be able to hand off to others to be able to mix in ProTools. It’s not something I have any choice over, which is why OMF is a massive issue for me.

  • [Jeremy Garchow] ” And the slider next to “Color Mask” adjusts softness, but it’d be nice if there was a little more softness.”

Actually, I don’t think this is quite right now I’ve had a closer look at it – the slider doesn’t actually introduce softness, it just “crunches” the levels on the key which is not the same thing at all.

I’d say that in most cases the key is going to be unacceptably noisy as a result of missing this feature.

Honestly, the keyer in the 3-way is vastly superior to this … you can actually get some very decent results with it.

October 13, 2011 at 9:10 pm in reply to: Dear FCPX team,

[Oliver Peters] “No offense to Simon (and please don’t take this personally), but the proliferation of free effects presets based on existing tools”

Ouch, so it’s all my fault now!!!!!

To clarify, the third party solutions that interest me at this point are the ones that provide essential interfacing that absolutely should have been implemented by Apple and not left to the open market and patently unreliable third party providers.

I want OMF, AAF, EDL (plus of course broadcast monitoring, multicam – which may or may not be coming direct from Apple for all we know) and quite a lot else besides – I think everyone is very familiar with the list by now. FCPX won’t get any serious take-up in the professional market until someone shows a very clear commitment to providing these things.

In my mind the provider should be Apple – I don’t want scissors and paste, belt and braces Heath Robinson fixes from vendors who may or may not be in business tomorrow.

I don’t think the “proliferation” of a few very basic effects is really the issue here – though I suspect you’re not being entirely serious? Actually my hope would be that third party effects creators will raise the bar somewhat as a result the relative ease of making the basics. If you are going to be paying good money for an effects package it should genuinely contain advanced innovative coding that can’t easily be achieved “in the home kitchen”.

  • [Jeremy Garchow] “I think it took the best and most powerful aspects of Color, and then turned it on it’s side.”

Can’t agree with you there – one of the best and most powerful things about Color (in addition to the overall depth of control throughout the interface) were the Hue, Saturation and Luma Curves which I absolutely rely on and provide control actually not available elsewhere within Color, and certainly not matched by anything in the Color Board.

The other obvious major, major difference is the Color FX Room which was massively powerful – and had some great plug-ins from Graeme Nattress that took the whole thing to a completely different level.

I don’t see that anything of Color has been incorporated into the Color Board though the under-the-hood processing might owe something to it.

On the rest, I guess we’re not going to agree 😉
