NEW FCPX Drop Shadow & Border Effect
Posted by Simon Ubsdell on July 24, 2011 at 8:05 amNothing fancy here but this could be very useful.
A way to add those (missing from FCPX) border and drop shadow effects easily in one simple to use effect with controls for:
– Source image scale;
– border width and color;
– drop shadow opacity, blur, distance angle and fixed source option;
– background On/Off and background color;
– fade and/out of clip (defaults to zero but could be handy in some cases).Now if I were Brendan I’d have called this “Break for the Border” or something 😉

I think I’ve just been framed!

July 24, 2011 at 4:21 pmThis is great? Was it not possible to include the rounded corners? That was a nice feature in “Adjustable Frame”. Thanks for all you and Brendan are doing. It’s all very useful stuff!!

I was trying to keep it relatively simple so as not to overburden the interface – it’s not meant to be a frame effect as such as it doesn’t add a mask – but yes I could certainly add the round corners into this.

October 14, 2011 at 7:31 pmPLEASE HELP – How can I remove this?
I had installed it and applied to multiple video tracks in a project. Ever since, FCPX has been crashing constantly.
I can no longer render my projects and need to find a way to get a stable platform again.

October 14, 2011 at 9:37 pmDelete it from your User/Motion Templates/Effects folder which is presumably where you put it in the first place …
I have checked it out this end, however, and I can’t seem to see any problems with this Effect – it certainly doesn’t crash my ageing laptop if that’s anything to go by.

October 17, 2011 at 11:53 pmThanks, I double clicked it to install and it opened in Motion so I saved it as FCP fx. I’m very new to this so I wasn’t sure exactly where it went when I saved it.
I narrowed my FCP X crash triggers down to a four specific projects. Each of those projects used the effect on different overlapping video layers.
I’m not 100% sure if the effect was the cause of my issue but FCP tech support suggested I remove it along with some 3rd party fonts to try to eliminate the crashes.
The effect and fonts have been removed but I still can’t use these projects without crashing. Their only suggestion was to start over.
Thanks for your help. Your effects looked great and had everything I needed. I can’t believe Apple left something that basic out of their program.

October 18, 2011 at 9:34 amI can’t imagine what went wrong for you – as I say I’ve tried it to “break” it and can’t seem to get any problems with it this end – but maybe it’s down to the way you “installed” it and it somehow got corrupted going through Motion 5.
For future reference, the “right way” to install Motion plug-ins is to take the whole folder in which they live with all its contents (typically the folder you get when you unzip the archive) and move it to your User/Movies/Motion Templates/Effects folder. (Or Transitions, or Generators depending on the type of plug-in in question).
Sorry this didn’t work out for you – but sadly FCPX isn’t totally free of quirky behaviour just yet!
