Yes, but I find I can perfectly well do that without using the G key, or rather I can’t tell if there is any real difference if you use it or not, can you?

I’d also hope that having built Motion 5 so heavily into the FCPX landscape Apple will now start to develop it more seriously than they have in the past and turn it from a very fast and very handy semi-pro tool into one that genuinely competes at the top level.
For example, I’d like to see the introduction of Expressions, as well as extensive channel and colour space manipulation and a bunch of other stuff.
My negative side however keeps telling me that Motion is and will remain a close relative of FCPX in its design philosophy – good enough up to a certain point where it will keep hundreds of thousands of users more than happy but not allowed to develop to the point where it will finally become the grown-up tool that it is perfectly capable of being.
But then again, who knows? I’d love my negative side to be wrong.

This is a really interesting question. It does look as though this function isn’t actually implemented. The keyboard shortcuts documentation says:
Turn on or turn off the ability to build storylines when dragging clips in the Timeline
.. but I’d have to agree that nothing seems to happen any differently.
The manual also says of the G key:
You can also create a storyline by holding down the G key as you drag a clip to a connected clip so that their edges touch
However I’d say that you can do this whether or not you use the G key.

Strictly speaking Motion 5 is a 64 bit rewrite which is quite a big deal – which would probably also explain why there are a few bits “missing” from the previous version.

That’s brilliant – all works perfectly.
The only thing I stumbled over was that I didn’t immediately realize that you had to apply a theme for the installer do do its work. Maybe this ought to be optional or perhaps have some hint to the user that applying a theme is a necessary step.

You are absolutely right – this is the reason. Because I am still principally using Legacy rather than X, I am keeping X in a folder of its own:
/Applications/Final Cut Pro X/Final Cut Pro.app
… and leaving the FCS3 suite in its original folder.

For some reason however when I try to launch the app it tells me I haven’t got Final Cut Pro X installed … am I doing something wrong?

There is a “Background.On/Off” checkbox in the Inspector for this effect – it defaults to On but if you switch it Off you will be able to do what you are asking.

A couple of extra tweaks to this effect:
You can now also choose Chalk mode (as well as solid and airbrush) for a more organic look. However, please note that while in chalk mode you cannot move the control points so select this only when you’re already happy with your shape.
Finally you can now also choose the shape of your end points (Square, Round, Bevel or Arrow) when not in Chalk mode.
