Tracey from CineFlare and I (Dylan) combined our supernatural powers to build Title Pop. We wanted a title pack that looked good for the quick drag and drop edit and customizable enough for unique text animations. After adding the final ingredients we stirred the cauldron and out came Title Pop.
They did stir the cauldron which I reckon probably makes it worth the 50 bucks.

You may be interested in this free plug-in (available through FxFactory) which is designed to help with exactly the task you describe without the need for keyframes:

You can of course do it yourself with keyframes but this makes it a lot easier and more flexible, especially if you are doing this kind of thing often.

A Title Effect that give you the option of both a BBC standard Safe Title/Action Overlay and a layout Grid.
The effect (which can be placed like a title layer) above your program has a selector for either the Safe Action/Title (with optional crosshairs) or one of two Grid overlays, either squares or 16:9 aspect ratio rectangles (both of which can be scaled to taste), for accurate positioning of titles and other graphics elements.
There are various controls for the colour of the various elements of the overlays and different components can be switched on/off as desired.
Note that there are a variety of Safe Action/Title effects out there of varying degrees of accuracy. This one adheres strictly to the BBC standard (Safe Action = 80% active width, 93% active height; Safe Title = 65% active width, 90% active height), but the specifics may vary in your territory.

Are there any areas in particular that are giving you problems?
I’d say that generally Motion’s keyframing toolset is pretty extensive and very easy to use once you are familiar with it.
And if you don’t want to touch Behaviors, you don’t have to, but there’s a wealth of extra speed and power that they bring that’s fairly astounding. You can very quickly do stuff that would take far longer to achieve, and be much slower to fine tune, in AE.

I don’t think that what Tad was asking for though – as I understand it he wants to feather the edges “all round” hence my suggestion to simply use the rectangle mask tool and feather it.

I guess they had to set the default somewhere – if you make a square or rectangle that is 100 pixels high then the default value works perfectly. If you bear that in mind it’s easy to work out the right numbers for your chosen shape.
Don’t forget that if you want something different as a “default” that you can easily call up, you can set the Gradient to how you’d like it and then save it as a preset using the Save Gradient option in the Inspector.

It’s pretty quick to select your layer, select the rectangle mask tool, drag it out to the shape of your image, then feather the mask. I can’t think of a quicker way I’m afraid.
