Glad to help – but actually in following the usual recommendation for this kind of job (I seem to remember it’s what the manual recommends along with various tutorials), I didn’t of course tell you the best way of doing it in this instance, which is not to use a paint stroke but a simple bezier shape set to outline mode.
You can use the same write-on behavior technique and you’ll get a cleaner, tidier result.
The paint stroke routine is useful if you are using a pen and you are wanting to use the ballistics of your actual movements but otherwise it’s an unnecessary fiddle for this, especially if you only have a mouse to draw with.
BTW – do you guys make the split screen plug in for Adobe PP CC as well as FCPX?”

To add the paint stroke to your image mask drag it to here:
To change the leading edge of the paint stroke change these parameters of the stroke from round to square:

The white background is only there for the icon in the library.
Adding the emitter to your project you should be seeing blacks bats with an alpha channel, i.e. no background colour at all.
Here it is with the viewer set to show Alpha – the white is the black bats and the black is transparent:
Is that not what you’re getting?

With the paint stroke tool draw a fat line that covers your tick mark.
Then add an Image Mask to your tick layer (Cmd/Shift/M) and add the paint stroke to the image mask source well. Adjust the Stroke Outline Width so it covers your tick completely.
Now you can add a Write On Behavior to your paint stroke trimming the length of the behavior so it gives you the length of animation your require.
Select Forward or Reverse from the Behavior Direction menu as required.
You might want to edit the points of the Paint Stroke so you keep only the three essential corner points.

You might want to check out Tokyo Split Animator if you have access to FCP X:

It will do most of what you see in that title sequence (including taking care of a lot of the animation very simply and quickly) but making something as long and as complex as that will always take quite a bit of time – and planning – whichever way you go about doing it.

As indicated by the .moef file extension this is an Effect that can be used in FCP X – sorry, I should have given you the usual installation instructions, as follows:
Copy the entire downloaded folder into your User/Movies/Motion Templates/Effects folder and it will then show up in FCP X in your Effects Browser.
Simply apply the effect to your clip and adjust the controls to your liking, animating any parameters you want to animate.

I’ll keep plugging away and see where we get to – I guess what I really need is a green screen studio, a desk, and a willing sidekick 😉 Oh, and some better material would help, of course.
