Well, for example sometimes people decide to colour correct a camera angle before they add it to the multiclip sequence so they don’t have to do it clip by clip later. Depending on the filter you add to the clip, FCP will either try and play it on the fly or force you to render it first. one 3 way Colour Correction filter is generally ok but 2 or more filters will certainly slow you down and depending on the desired filters will most likely require a render. (Depending on your RT system profile)
If I remember rightly, Prores is about 14Mb/sec so 5 streams of that and you are at 70MB/sec plus 10-15% for system process requirements, you’ll need to be running ESATA drives minimum just to keep up! Your green (preview) line probably came from you using Prores on sequence set up for a different video format so add the realtime rendering required to play Prores on the fly plus bandwidth required for the Prores streams and yeah, your system may start to weep a little bit!“Is it me or do I spend half my life watching little grey bars turn into little blue bars??”

I believe you are talking about a posterframe. Depending on how you’ve built your website and how you’ve added the QT component, you may have the option of setting a thumbnail (a jpeg screenshot) or to select the posterframe (a dynamically selected frame from within the video itself.)
I use flash for web video content and most flv video components give you the option of setting a thumbnail image that works as a placeholder until the play button is pressed. (like YouTube) You should find the same kind of options within your QT component.
All the best,

I can’t comment on the coding of the xml and whether it’ll work or not but xml docs can be opened and edited in multiple apps. I generally edit mine in Text Edit. Depends on the setup of the system they are being opened on as to which app will be used.

Warranty has always been an issue for me David.
Only a year or two ago did Apple start honouring Service Care agreements in Cyprus. Before that you would have to ship your kit at your own expense to Ireland or Greece for Service Care work or pay for the fixes locally out of your own pocket. You still can’t buy Service Care locally but at least now Apple will support it on the island if you purchase Service Care from other countries. Thankfully 1 year warranty is covered on the island at no expense, but my experience with Apple tends to be that nothing goes wrong in the first 12 months!
There are no LaCie or Epson service providers in Cyprus either so again it’s up to us to ship it to the nearest covered country for repair at our own expense. (Even if the faulty kit is under warranty) Or you take it back to the point of sale which again, is usually not in Cyprus as prices are way over the odds here on a lot of pro kit.The fun of living on a rock in the Med I guess!

Don’t forget to select Gang from the drop down menu on the viewer otherwise your playhead won’t sync to the multiclip stream. If you”re not getting RT controls it’s because you are using a format that FCP doesn’t support with RT like H.264 (a delivery codec not an editing codec). What are your project formats/settings?

Simon

Have you got any filters applied to your original clips? Green line can imply a filter that FCP will attempt to play realtime but may have trouble with if you are trying to play multiple streams. Double check your sequence settings though cos a green line can mean a difference in formats that FCP will attempt to play on the fly.

March 27, 2010 at 11:30 am in reply to: Snow Leopard Incompatibility With Many eSATA CardsI have the Apiotek branded Dual Port Sil 3132 Esata Express card for my 17inch MBP (Late 2008 model) running Snow Leopard. I installed the BASE drive from the Apiotek website and as long as I insert the card before powering on my MBP everything works fine.
Forget about hot swapping it though! I read in an article online (https://quernstone.com/archives/2009/04/esata-on-macs.html) that the Sil 3132 chipsets really start to freak out with MBPs running > 10.5 that have more than 2GB of RAM installed and hot swapping causes instant Kernel Panics.
I picked up the card a while ago from Jigsaw in the UK for about 30 GBP. It works fine as long as I insert it before I power up. Slightly inconvenient but I can live with that!
All the best,
Simon

February 9, 2010 at 3:30 pm in reply to: Multiclip VIDEO not in sync, not necessarily an audio problem (?)The different sample rate could be your culprit.
You can use Compressor to convert your audio up to 16bit/48Khz. (Or even iTunes if you’re not too up on Compressor.)
Off the top of my head, I don’t know of any specific posts, but check out the Compression Techniques Forum and the Compressor Manual chapter that deals with sample rates. All the best,
Simon

February 9, 2010 at 8:56 am in reply to: Multiclip VIDEO not in sync, not necessarily an audio problem (?)Joel,
Have you checked that both your clips are using the same audio sample rate? If one of your handycams was set to 32Khz and the other to 48khz you may need to convert the 32khz audio and bring it back into your project. Might be worth a small test? All the best,
